Horse DNA Found in UK Beef Burgers

As a farmer with farm assurance passport and many more rules and regs up until they are slaughtered how can this happen? My horses will be buried as they and I bet a vast percentage of pet horses can't go in food chain as have had bute.

Well, I think you get what you pay for TBH. That's why I always scrutinise the labelling on meat products like sausages, ready-made burgers, frankferters, etc. Unless something specifies it only contains 100% of a specified meat type, then it probably doesn't. A lot of product labels include a percatage figure against "meat and the by products of meat production": that doesn't specify WHAT type of meat that includes. So that labelled 'Beef burger' containing x amount of beef PLUS x amount of 'meat and the by products of meat production' suggests beef will not be the only animal meat in the product. If in doubt, be suspicious. That's my motto.

I was so sick of the facebook ''its so cruel'' status I had to post my view :o

''Really people. Get over this horse meat thing, it may be about the 'food standards' but is not about cruelty, as long as the horses were dispatched quickly and efficiently (without having to travel over seas in terrible conditions, another matter entirely) then what is the issue? On the continent horse meat is as popular as cow (and far healthier!) As a horse lover I would far rather horses be humanely destroyed and used in meat and pet products (if for human consumption clearly labeled ;)) than left to suffer neglect and cruelty at the hands of thick ignorant/downright evil people or die of starvation on Bodmin moor. No I wouldn't choose to eat horse meat out of sentiment but have no issue with horses being used for meat in this country, as long as they are destroyed in UK abattoirs. Its better than some other fates.''

That is my view

Knowing I have horses, someone at work asked me about this. My immediate reaction was that I hope the horse meat does not come from the UK, as many of our horses have taken bute, which is poisonous to humans.
