So im bringing my horse back into work and previous to this had been working a lot on hacking as this is where his problems lie. He is now a star hacking however has now become rather excitable in the school. today i took him in and he just trots and canters whenever he feels like it! I understand weve been doing little schooling and he will be feeling fresh but i want to get him out of this before he takes it up as a habit. my initial thought was to whenever he tries to canter when we are trotting for example stop him and stand. then go past the same area again in trot and keep doing this until he goes past nicely. this seemed to work by the end and we had a nice collected and extended trot. however people are telling me that im doing it all wrong and i should just leave him to do what he wants he will soon get bored... So now i dont know what to do! Arghh!! Any tips please? What would you do mine or the other peoples idea? Luckily got the whole summer to work with him:) Tea and biscuits for all those who have listened to my babble

Why not take him out for a nice hours hack, and then return to the school for a short 15 min session?

He then won't be fresh, and already listening to you.

I wouldn't leave him to get on with it! I have a mare that I can't school as she does exactly that! she was 16 when I got her, so was very set in her ways! I'd want to walk, she'd trot, I'd want to trot, she'd canter, I'd want to canter, she'd jump as fast as she could!! or i'd try to slow her down, she'd canter on the spot! so if what you have been doing has worked, then i'd suggest you carry on with that! there's nothing worse than a horse that gets its own way!

Cant quote on mt phone but amymay thats actually a great idea ill give it a try!
Kerrieberry2 ah glad im not the only one;) luckily my lads just turned 6 so is pretty easy to get out of his ways:)
