Does anyone have any experience of a horse that has done the splits and damaged the ligaments that holds the hip joint stable??? My pony has done this and damaged her stifle on one stand so all 3 joints pop out when she moves. She has seen the vet etc and is cross tied in the stable but it is making her so jumpy and she is so unhappy that was wondering what the outlook is for her. Has anyone elses horse done this and what was the outcome? Did they recover and carry on to be riding horses?
Thanks

No advice, sorry, but I didn't want to read and run. Sorry to hear about your mare. How long ago did she do it, and is she on any medication such as bute etc?

I had a mare here (not mine) who was cross tied for a long time after a suspected pelvic fracture, she coped ok and came right in the end :).

We rearranged the grazing so that she could always see another horse.

She did it on Tuesday so still early days. She is on no drugs at all in the hope that if it hurts she'll protect herself more but she must have a pain threshold the height of the empire states building cause its very rare you see any sign of pain from her.

I remember now that the mare here was also off painkillers for the same reason. We were told that she must not lie down under any circumstances. She was not terrible sore when standing still, though. Have you spoken to your vet recently to see if they can suggest anything to settle her?

It must be very distressing for you to see her like this.

I have got some sedalin for her and she will be having it tomorrow as her best friend is off to play dressage. It isn't nice and exhausting stressing about her all the time.

If you are insured you may be able to get her into a specialist yard rather than trying to care for her yourself. Depends if she is fit to travel.

Yes!! We had a little pony do exactly this when I was about 7 or 8.... So a good 20-something years ago....

Back in those days lol the solution was bute, box rest for a while and then dr green - she had 12 months off in total I vaguely recall.... Little pony was back to normal and capable of work with no long lasting problems.

My mare did the splits but it was in front. Tore her biceps brachii tendon. Prognosis was very poor but she did come sound after 18 months. Sadly, she repeated the injury 3 years later and due to other problems (laminitis) I decided to PTS. Devastating. Personally, I would not cross tie. She had box rest for 12 weeks then went to Rossdales and then more box/very small gradual expanding paddock rest.

Not quite the same, but my horse fell with me in the school, splitting one leg not both, and damaged his meniscus. He was not a great patient, hand-walking was fairly impossible (even on sedalin), we tried several months of box rest and several months of field rest, but in order for them to recover from that sort of injury they have to be pretty quiet & relaxed. I had him PTS after almost a year as he was no better and unlikely to ever be.
