I turned my horse out on Saturday morning for a couple of hours in the snow and, seeing as he had been in all week, went a bit loopy and galloped up and down the hill skidding to a stop at the fence.

I rode him that afternoon and in trot it sounded as though he was forging or bashing his other foot. He felt as though his off hind end was slightly lower than his near hind end if that makes sense. I got home and found that he had been dragging his toe and had worn away a bit of his hoof.

I imagine he has tweaked something whilst arsing about in the field. He was kept in yesterday and given a bute on Sat pm and one yesterday. Trotted him up and he is sound so have turned him out for an hour or two to stretch his legs. He is much more sedate today so no arsing around!

Just wondering what the next course of action should be. I'm not sure how long to give him off, whether to ring physio and ask her to come out or whether to trot him up tonight and if he sounds and looks ok to ride him out walking tomorrow morning. Any ideas?

my horse did this but he had a bit of swelling up his back leg (he also pulled his front shoe off!). I gave him bute for 4 days 1 bute twice a day and kept him in and hand walked him and all being well and good he has been find for the last week or so.

I'd also stick him on the lunge and see if he's sound and cantering properly. My grey horse was buggering about in the field and started to canter disunited so I've been resting him for 2 weeks to see if that sorts it. If not, I shall be getting the vet out.

Am waiting for physio to call me back. I led him out this morning to see how he felt. Didn't help that it was seriously windy and there was a lot of flappy plastic covering a house renovation which sent him batty!!

He didn't drag at all today although seems to be interfering slightly with other hoof by coronet band which is usually a sign he needs his back looking at. He's being shod today and hopefully back lady will be over v.soon to get him in tip top shape!!

Thanks for advice. I've got back ache today in probably exactly the same place that the horse is sore. What a pair!
