Horse drinker advice please

Well I have had a enough of lugging water buckets around so about to invest in some automatic drinkers for the yard. I quite like the idea of the ones that work of the horses nose, apparently they do not have any water in the bowl so no nasty stagnant cleaning to do, not quite sure how they work though. Anyone used them. Knowing my daft steed he might not use it if it is scary or makes too much noise! Mine was too stupid to work out how to use these so ended up swapping them for one that uses a float switch (a bit like how loos refill)
 
That looks close to the ones we have and they are fine. some horses do jump the first time the water comes out but they get over it and work them out very quickly. the best way with new horses is to half fill them and let the horse discover how to use them that way. it also means there is a bit less noise and water does not suprise them as much. basically the horses nose pushed the bit sticking down at the back and it lets water out.
 
Just shove some peppermint cordial or some apple juice in the waterer. They will soon get the idea!
My horse picked it up in seconds. Once they can smell the water they are away.

A word of warning though. My waterer doesn' refill fast enough for my horse after exercise when he is hot in the warm weather and he gives up on it, catching up in his field dustbin of water when he is turned out in the evening. So I tend to give him a bucket of tepid water so he can quence his thirst first and so he can take enough water on board to last him until turnout.
 
Its been shown that horses drink more (and therefore better for them) if the bowl is bigger rather than smaller. If i get a chance to install any, I will be going for cattle ones which seem to have a bigger bowl. Agree with applecart about refilling and amount.
They can crap in them, but they can also do this in water buckets and they aren't usually hard to clean out.
Great for when you can't get back during the day or if you have a horse that drinks a lot at times; not good when you want to monitor how much water they are drinking.

I brought the blue one of theirs I did not like it as it is a tiny nose hole.

so I went for this one and really happy with them as I have 3 so far and still have another to buy.http://www.robinsonsequestrian.com/...kers-mangers/wall-drinker-blue-16-litres.html
It fills quite quickly considering the size of the bowl.
