Horse drooling at feed time

Just interested to hear of any other horses that may do this, as it is not something I have come across before.

He used to have a picky appetite when younger, but for the last several years has been eating well. He has had a tendency to paw the ground while feeds are being mixed, in anticipation ……For the last couple of months however he has been pawing the ground and drooling saliva like a dog while waiting for his feed to arrive at his door. He than eats it normally, and there is no sign of it any other time/circumstance!

It happens when he has had hay and/or grass recently and when without …..

Mine doesn’t drool but does chomp and lick his lips when he knows he’s about to be fed!

mine just digs up the concrete, or tries to if i am not quick enough

It's obviously more common than I realised....I have been joking that he is turning into a seriously overgrown labrador as he also loves licking people, and will drape himself all over me/try to sit in my lap if I let him ( all 18hh of him), plus he has just had to be retired early, and we are also getting the "why aren't you paying me enough attention" sulks too!

My friends pony does this too. Had teeth checked by EDT and vet. He's just a greedy sod.

Mine gets a bit drolly if you give her haylage (she’s usually on a permanent diet)

My big old cob gelding who is obsessed with food does drool when he sees you coming down the field with his tea, also chats away

My Appy produces big, bubbly slobber when the dinner bucket appears. She's extremely greedy!

Our old boy used to do this, a huge amount of white, frothy slobber in front of his stable door. ETA he always had a wet mouth when ridden too.

Mine would sometimes flap his lips which is a Standardbred thing to do (and is weird as he was on a SB farm but was in a completely different barn and field. I can't find the video but he can be like a fish lol!

Old Horse licks his lips, nickers and, if service is too slow for his liking, gives peremptory raps on the stable door!
