My horse won't stop eating mud!

I put haylage out but not interested in the slightest heads straight for the gateway where there s no grass and just eats mud and dirt.....

Have given mineral/salt block again not interested.

Have restricted turnout time as ingesting that much mud/dirt isn't healthy.

Any other ideas....

Can you have a sample analysed to see what it consists of and then you may be able to work out exactly what your horse is craving? Your horse may have a deficiency that isn't provided by the licks, or perhaps not in the quantity he needs. Unlike cows and some other animals, horses have very smooth tongues so they are unable to "lick" large amounts of minerals, unfortunately. The other thing you'd need to worry about is sand colic. I'd definitely look into this further....
