My 9 yr old 18.hh gelding has started eating poop. When to get him out of the field yesterday and his muzzle was covered in it!!! He has chewed through a new wooden fence a couple of months ago but now its poop! I know it could be boredom, lack of vitamins and minerals, worms but not sure. He gets wormed regularly on the yards worming programme, he is turned out with 5 other horses (3 are mine) every night from about 6pm to 8 am. The field has plently of grass, hedgerow plants, hawthorne. He gets fed quality hay when he comes in to rest for a couple of hours , plus two small feeds of Allen and Page slim and healthy. He doesnot get ridden due to bad joint problems (birth defect).
I am not sure what causeing it, he is a big lad, chunky and i struggle to keep his weight down due to being unable to exercise him. Any suggestions anyone????

Can't help you, but the same problem here, hope anyone has a useful answer, because all of the above mentioned causes don't apply for my mares, as well. They've never done it before:confused:

Can you maybe put on a vit supplement to see that is the problem? or give your horse stuff to occupy itself incase it is boredom?

Yes i am going to up his fibre intake and also put him on a vitamin and mineral supplement to see if this helps. May get him a stable lick too hes just such a big horse and because of his joint problems i struggle to keep his weight off.
