Hi

Since the weather has turned cold my horse has gone from a dope on a rope to lead to the field in the mornings to being a little excited. Bucking, prancing sideways and being a bit weird! It's only first thing and only since it's got cold!
Is this normal?! Is it something I should somehow reprimand? If so then how?!

He sounds as if he may be getting cold , is he rugged at night?
I would try to stop him getting too naughty as this can become more of a habit and lead to a dangerous situation if he gets too unruly, think ahead to ice or snow and stop it now.You may need to use a controller headcollar or bridle until he is walking calmly again, take him to the field and make him stand for a few moments before letting him go.

Can be - are you turning our everyday? I left mine in for one day, as one had a bruised foot - and next day, they behaved as if they had never been turned out before! We have gone in the past month from turning out at night (in by day) to the other way - because of the flies etc. So maybe your animals are just looking forward to going out, where they are not going to have to huddle under a tree / field shelter away from the flies - to grazing normally? Also have you an Oak Tree in your field? Mine have been mad for the Acorns - even jumping electric fencing to get to them......it is not just piggies who love them - I worry about them eating them (hence the fencing - but touch wood, they are gulping them down to no ill effect, at the moment........

I wouldn't worry too much, a change in the weather can get them on their toes especially this cold, fresh winter air. Mine was today coming in but soon settled :)

Just keep to a routine and firm, but fair handling so it doesn't become a habit or dangerous.

He's on full livery so I don't turn him out myself. He is rugged at night. He is turned out every day from about 8-4.
Maybe it's just the cold then. His very experienced groom says he is just being cheeky and fresh.
Just really odd!
