Horse Failed Vet: Swollen Fetlocks

Just had pony vetted, but vet failed it because of swollen fetlock joints on both legs. He was very vague about it, and tbh i dont think he knew where it came from.

What reasons would you give for swollen fetlocks?
We didint realise that he hadnt jumped properly since march, so would jumping him straightaway after a break make them swollen?
The hardish ground?
We have no idea, im just so confused and dissapointed as i really thought he would pass, as they've never had any problems with him before

Is he in or out ?
Maric always has puffy fetlocks when he's been kept in for some reason overnight as he normally lives out ?
 
I'd be fairly cautious TBH- could be a number of reasons and I'd want to know why there is swelling- the only way really I suppose (to find out) is by the Vet doing full lameness investigation and scan (and xrays if necessary) . It could be a degenerative problem- or hopefully, luckily for you he maybe could have tweaked it or could be the hard ground! fingers crossed. I really would speak to the Vet. (I'm only saying this as one of my horses has had treatment for a problem with his fetlock joint!).
 
Yeah we could, but the problem is they are 3 hours away. (we have the pony on trial atm). Think we will leave it for a week or so, see if they go down and have the vet look at it again, see what its like then.

I'd be fairly cautious too. I currently have my mare on nearly a year off because of annular ligament issues and that often starts with puffy/windgally fetlocks.

End of the day there are plenty more ponies out there that probably don't have puffy fetlocks!
 
Was he kept in all day as well waiting for the vet if so It may be because he was stood in all that time. Some horses have puffy legs if stood in all night or day.
If he'd been out first then I'd be a bit dubious
 
Merlins vetting said 'Swollen left hind fetlock'...... he passed all the flexion tests etc so it was just noted and he passed.

Many of you will know he now has serious arthritis in that fetlock, and the liklihood is that it was there on the vetting all those years ago.....

So even if he isnt lame it could be a sign of something serious...... merlins isnt puffy though it is hard as the joint has remodelled itself

He still passes a flexion on it though and has never been properly lame....... the joints mobility is just a bit restricted which makes him move a bit differently from the othe hind.
 
my pony will have puffy fetlocks if he has been worked on hard ground, I stick some arnica on it and normaly goes down.
