horse fallen on knees

my pony spooked and fell on her knees today

one knee looks fine but the other has a pink patch on it where all the hair has come off

whats the likelyhood that:-
1) the hair will grow back normal colour - black
2) the hair will grow back but white or
3)the hair wont grow back at all

ive washed it with salty water and put purple spray on it and she has her brushing boots on to stop fluid building up and has been put back in the field.

have i done the right thing? do you think i shd leave her boots on overnite?

my horse did the same to both knees they were both cut and bleeding.
i did the same as you have done then once the skin was healed I rubbed in cornucrescine to encourage the hair to grow. now you'd never know he'd done anything.

definitely better to leave turned out it should reduce any swelling as your horse will walk about whilst grazing.
the boots should be fine overnight as long as they're not too tight but if its the knees that got a bump not sure how the boots will help or have i misunderstood you ?

I would worry that the boots would keep any fluid that does build up on the knee itself, if you want to avoid swelling you would need a knee bandage on but for that your horse would have to be in.

I would have thought if its just superficial leaving her out would be the best option. If it does swell then hose with cold water 10 mins 2 or 3 times per day.

My horse banged his knee in the stable it was a bit swollen but I didn't bother hosing as there was no heat so I thought it would go in a few days. Needless to say and he does now have a bit of a big knee on that leg, I could kick myself for not bothering with it.. its been checked out by the vet and is only cosmetic but I wish I had done more at the time!!

If she hasn't actually broken the skin (ie its bleeding) I pretty sure the hair will grow back fine. I personally wouldn't bother with the boots if your leavin her out to wonder as this should do her the most good. Cold hosing is good to bring any swelling down.
If the skin is broken keep the wound moist (ie intrasite or aloe vera) and this will encourage better healing/less scar tissue.

My old horse stumbled and went down on her knees on the road in the summer. One knee just lost the hair the other had a slight graze. I cold hosed them, used purple spray and left her out. The fur has grown back liver chesnut (her colour) athough it did take a while. Needless to say I always use knee boots on her now.
