Hi,i have a heavyweight 4yr old gypsy cob that i have just moved to a new yard nearer my home it has the facilities i need but not as much grazing he has been turned out with 2 other horses on 4acres some of it as gone brown due the sun,i rode him out the other day for about an hour nothing strenuous just ploding and a couple of small trots then on the way home he fell to his knees for no apparent reason didn't trip weren't on a hill just flat tarmac i got off him just a small cut to his knee he was sweating and looked tired so lead him home hosed him down put him in stable and monitored him he was going at his nets like no tomorrow could it be he's not getting enough grass i took him on 3/4hr hacks at the other place with no prob's at all

How was the tarmac in the heat? Sounds quite odd for a horse to actually fall from lack of grass unless condition is really not good...

<bumping for you to get some more experienced replies>

It wasn't to warm as i rode him in the morning and the tarmac is smooth it is unsual never happened before he got straight back up but i thought best to lead him back he just seemed a bit tired there's plenty water in the field to

Get some knee boots - leather ones are much the best you don't want broken knees, the recovery period is so long. You might not be so lucky next time - it only took skidding a metre after doing down on the road from a trot for my horse to skin his knees to the bone; he was in 24/7 for six months but made a full recovery.

my gypsy cob has fallen to his knees, he does lean on the forehand and is something they can be prone to especially at your horses age. I'm no expert I just know I needed to school him to get him working from behind better. I'm glad to hear you are both ok. Maybe have someone come an look at him whilst you are riding him to see what sort of work he needs?
