hi whats the best food for a well balanced diet

also how often would you feed a welsh sec b mare to my knowledge would 2/3 times a day be enough as grazing is not good at the moment

also how many bags of feed should i buy as i dont remember how long a 20kg bag will last

How often you feed depends on what you are feeding. If you are feeding big meals then you need to split them in to as many feeds as possible. What you are feeding depends on age, workload, condition, etc. If grazing is poor you need to feed more hay as a starting point. Then there are different options for the bucket feed, it really depends on whether the pony needs to gain or lose condition or stay as it is.

If grazing is poor, then the basis of a good diet is ad lib good quality hay or haylage. If you feel additional vit/mins are needed then feed a vit/min supplement or a balancer. If additional calories are needed to maintain weight or for extra energy, then add fibre feeds and oil - things like unmolassed beet, Alfa A (either Oil or Original), dried grass products etc.

Dodson and horrell safe and sound is a good feed for natives, its a complete feed but is high in fibre, low in starch. my shetland gets a small scoop of it along with hay.
