bringing my boy in from field he slipped heavily on both knees with a thud ( he was shocked and stepped high on one leg i put him in stable and knees are skinned over large area and a bit bloody he was acting like a child with a badly scrapped knee cleaned it in the process he spooked and barged me into the wall nasty and ran out of door ( advise please will it have any long term damage should i keep him in tommorrow as field really muddy just until it skins over a bit he dosnt seem stiff though or lame after first few steps he has lost lots of haitr will it grow back white ?( any tips please im also being paranoid about any damage hes done to his knee im ringing vet in morning though my boy hes so accident prone or this or the other he really worries me but winded me when barged as well not nice

My pony fell on his knees out hacking last october and cut them pretty badly. One was very deep and the other not so. Didn't get the vet out straight away as though it'd be fine so just cleaned them up and kept him in so they wouldn't get muddy.

Then YO got back the next day and said we should call the vet because of where it was. Vet came and said he was lucky and that if he had been a finer type horse (he's a highland) then it would of been to the bone!

Vet just told us to keep them clean,use something like sudocream on them and not to turn him out till they had started scabbing over. We did that and it took quite a while for them to heal fully and the hair has grown back white but he never had any other problems from it. The worse one doesn't have any hair right in the middle of it but you can't tell unless you dig around the hair on his knees.

Agree with what jemima has to say. Are there any deep cuts? Otherwise would cold hose to get bruising down. So difficult to call when you can't see injury and often quite difficult when you can!! If you have any doubt, I would get the vet

If there is clear fluid leaking then it is an emergency that won't wait for tomorrow. Your call, you saw the knees I didn't. If clear fluid is leaking it is the "padding" in the synovial capsule round the joint. If it's coming out then infection will be getting in and you do not want infection around a joint like that.

Last time I had one do this was some 30+ years ago and I can't remember the treatment, I do remember that I bought him knee boots that he always wore when on the roads afterward and that his lovely black knees (he was a dapple grey) had white patches on them.
 
Mine did this to himself a couple of weeks ago or at least I assume he did. Little so and so worked out how to open the stable door and took him self off around the yard and when I found him in the morning he had two very scuffed looking knees. I checked them over and they were totally superficial, no synovial fluid leaking (as mentioned this is a BIG problem and needs the vet) so I just cold hosed and sprayed with blue spray and let him get on with it. He wasn't bothered by them at all and the scabs are starting to peel off now. I'll keep you posted about whether the hair comes back white but I expect not as neither was terribly deep.
 
chippies manage to do this twice now, though not infront of witnesses, never any clear fluid but have been fairly bad- cleaned him up and purple sprayed, the hair grows beck white and he will be having knee boots for all riding related activities when he comes back from schooling
 
It's known as Broken Knees - remember Black Beauty (the book) fell and broke his knees, that's why he was sold cheap as m'lady couldn't have him in her carriage with such a blemish.
It does de-value a horse, but so long as you know why it happened and it's not likely to happen again, and you're not selling him on, hopefully he'll recover.
It's one of those difficult places to heal, obviously, with the amount of pressure the horse puts on the skin when he bends the knees.
I believe the thinking was that broken knees likely indicated navicular - which of course it acn do.
 
keep on posting thanks feel like im the walking disaster at the minute had the very experianced yo check him there def is no fluid skin off tiny spec bits of blood was cleaned and hes a wuss lifting his knee hes a mummys boy like my children ,honestly im terrible i always get vet out for little things so people said he has a history of tripping ( in walk only nver i other paces i put this down to youngness and find hes better barefoot , he just had a full set put on on friday funny thing was i was reluctant because of bad wether was thinking about slipping i will have the shoes removed when hes better i will get some knee boots as well
I did think of black beauty and broken knees !Hes bay-im not planning on selling him hes one of the family )
 
My horse managed the exact same thing speaking on the road 6 weeks ago. (He is bay with black legs, so of Course i was panicking madly about white knees!!). All we did was clean then to start with, the applied sudocream for a few days until it scapped over, then put wonder gel on the scab. Came back black, and you can't even tell now!! :)

-I've heard from others that actually Cornucrescine helps prevent permentant scaring (she uses it on her rather accident prone tb, and no white marks yet!).

Just suggestion though.
 
The best gel I have used for cuts is Derma-Gel. Its really good easy to apply and fights infection and encourages the scab.

I think you can buy it fromm the vets but some saddlers sell it, I think derby house might but not 100% sure, you can also use it on cats and dogs :)

he looks just like yours as well ! well checked this morning and didnt seem half as bad but right knee swollen right up walked trotted no lameness vet says to hose knee, cream on , keep clean was happy for him to go out in field again says hairs will probs come back white he has black legs but ill get over it as long as hes ok ....i callled him a baby for keep on showing me his knee ...maybe im the bigger wuss ......its over lots of his knees but looks like really just hair and grazed skin
