My silly old girl got the wind under her tail yesterday and after a "play" in the outdoor would not walk to her stable. Just as we are almost on safe ground "snow covering grass" she lost the plot and tried to gallop off - she hit a patch of ice covered in snow and crashed to the ground. It makes me sick just thinking about it again.

It took me 3 attempts to get her up - she had really smacked her jaw and neck on the ice and had smacked down on her belly - the leg i though would be broken is fine - it is the opposite one that she is a little stiff on. She could not stretch her neck to eat from the floor yesterday and was almost in shock - fortunatley for me OH came as soon as i called him as i though i would be phoning the local huntsman.... and he seamed to snap her out of going into shock.

She was given two danillon yesterday and today seams very bright - a sore still in the neck and struggles a little to get moving - she is walking fine once she gets moving. She is putting full weight on her "bad leg" and is interested in having a fuss and scratch

Now how long should i give her to heal before i call the vet? I personally think she is just a little battered and brusied and whilst her ego and appetite were affected yesterday she is back to being her old cheeky, greedy self today - but she is pretty sore.

Why not just give your vet a ring and explain what happened. Im sure they would be able to help you over the phone. Will probably prescribe bute/danillon and rest as you have done. She will be like us and how we would be after a fall, a bit stiff and sore, and Im sure it will fade in a day or two. Vet may say let her have a couple of days in stable with a little in hand walking.

Good luck and hope shes ok. x

Poor girl, I do hope she will be alright.

I agree with Izzwizz .... but I would also be concerned that she may have sustained a hematoma

. An innocent fall by my TB a few years ago meant he ended up with a big one, which although caused him no discomfort, the swelling and treatment was a worry

Have a chat to your Vet

I would get the vet anyway. He/she can palpate the horse all over and advise accordingly, including anti-inflammatories. I know its too late now but for future reference you have to be very careful about giving danilon/bute to a horse after a fall as it can cause more problems to certain injuries, such as fractures, by relaxing the muscles. They should only be given under supervision of the vet.

Hope shes ok

Aw poor girl

My chap fell over in the field and i thought i was lucky, he seems fine, trotted up sound etc. It was only when i lunged him 2 days later i noticed he was lame on his hind on a circle.

He tore the ligament in his stifle.

Fingers crossed your girl will be ok xx

teddyt - thanks for that info - must admit i would never have thought about that - she is perscribed one danillon a day due to her arthtitus (can never spell that word!)

Charlie55 - she is much better today - and went across the field with a proper mission to find grass - she came back 20 mins later and called to be brought back in lol. She is almost retired anyhow - so she is having until the spring off - I will contact the vet on monday - dont want to bother them at the min as she does not seam to bad - but the roads are a nightmare to our yard - i had to park and walk there the twice i have been today.

How is your chap?

I think it would be worth getting her looked over by the vet or physio at some stage, in a couple of weeks or so.

I went to a talk by a physio who says that if a horse has a bad fall, but gets up OK, it is quite likely that it has done something that does not show up for a while and then several weeks/months on you find something not quite right and you think back and remember the fall.

Not very good unfortunatley, we are going back to the vets for more scans as the 6 weeks box rest he had didnt make any improvement.
