Horse fell over.... twice

I thought nothing of this as i thought she was just dosey....

she is a very laid back mare anyhow...but she was shod the other day and while being shod she was dozing off slightly/relaxing then fell over to one side (knees hit the ground) and fell onto the farrier.... thank god he moved in time,,

anyhow - horse did not panic at all - got up, and about 10 minutes later did it again.....the other side...

I thought she had lost balance but she has been shod with me before and was fine last time


Now, have i got a seriously laid back horse (she is rather chilled anyhow) or basically colapsing like that something more wrong..? She has become quieter in the past week or more tbh... shes always quiet anyhow though...

Farrier asked how old she was.... thinking old horse...

thoughts? has anyone else got a chilled horse like her???
 
Could be narcolepsy. Have a word with your vet.

My fiarly stessy mare suffered fro narcolepsy and would seem to fall asleep and drop to her knees. It got more noticeable as she got older. I recognised the signs and knew to get her to move before she fell over and that seemed to snap her out of it.

first time shes ever done it.... she was very relaxed, her head was droppy but i really have assumed that she was just so chilled out as shes so calm anyhow!!...
 
My old boy has induced narcolepsy. Could be that mabye? I know a polo pony who developed it, fine in the games but if stood still will sometimes just fall over. Mine was induced when plaiting up or pulling the mane and forelock for some reason, could hers be to do with weight distribution causing it or simply the action of holding a leg up? But could be so many other things as well!

um yeah? really?!! never ever had a mare before so im still learning :D :D


shes so incredibly lovely....not a nasty bone in her body, takes everything in her stride....and never ever puts her ears back except for her girth (but im getting her saddle checked)

Shes not on a high energy feed, is out all day in the field and currently out of work as im waiting for the dentist, physio and saddle fitter and i dont feel at all happy riding her until shes checked (as she as playing up)....



I will keep an eye on her (was monday when she fell) i kept her in as i thought she was just too quiet.... she was fine and didnt look at all bothered, i just assumed she was just so chilled she erm.... fell over! twice!
 
Our horse used to do this bit he was very old (in his 30's when he started although we retired him from ridden work aged about 26 as he used to stumble). I can't remember if we had a vet check him/advise us or whether we came to the conclusion ourselves but it would appear his check ligaments wee no longer 'locking' as they should when he was snoozing. he would fall asleep, his head would drop very low and i think due to the weight of his head dropping his knees would go and he'd fall.

Now, maybe it was narcolepsy (it was many years ago now) and that could be the case with yours as aged 4 i would think it unlikely there is an issue with her check ligamnets. i would certainly get a vet to check her over though as it definitely is not normal for a horse to fall over when just stood snoozing!

I too have chilled out mare, in fact I have 2. They are both horizontal and one is only 4. If we encounter anything that they don't understand they will both just stop, consider it and then get round it, never get stressy or panic - they are the easiest horses I have ever owned.

I have to admit neither have fallen on the farrier but my older mare is a nightmare to get out of bed in the morning!
