Was riding this morning and wasn't sure whether horse was sound. I know its hard to tell when on top but leant forward to have a look as we were trotting and I'm sure he was nodding a bit. We were on grassy/frosty tracks.

Got OH to trot him up in the yard when I got home and he seemed totally fine, dishes slightly but that's it.

Any ideas? If a horse is lame on soft and sound on hard what does that mean?

Or he's got a little something brewing in his foot.

If he felt unlevel when you were riding him, pound to a penny he was unlevel when you trotted him up. Sometimes it's so slight though that we can feel it but not necessarily see it.

Hmmmmmmm!! I did think whatever it was was prob. in the foot because legs cold and hard. We did hunt over some quite flinty ground on Sat so could well be that.

Thanks guys.

My horse has been quite stiff and taking longer to warm up than usual. I was convinced he was lame, but trotted up sound.

So he either had flint in his foot or had pulled a muscle. I think muscle most likely.

Not sure about sitting wonky!! have got saddler coming out to assess new saddle she fitted 2 months ago tomorrow and she's a real horsey person so will trot him up for her.

It is hard to tell when the ground is so awful and you can't get a good trot unless on the road. Wonder if I'm worrying about nothing to be honest.

I doubt it. If you thought your horse was lame when you were riding it then have confidence in your own sense of your horse.

I'm sure it's nothing more than the flinty ground - so i wouldn't worry.

Sorry to hijack post but mine felt the same the other night, I am now thinking of getting back/saddle checked - as money is tight I can only afford to do one or the other this month so what would be best to do first? back or saddle? or would either be able to advise on both!?

Sorry Guildford!

I went months asking for vet to check this problem it ended up being soft tissue lameness in the hoof.Nothing was seen with trotting up in early stages it didnt show properly until the condition worsened. What breed is he if its tb then get his feet checked asap and ask your farrier about some pads. You could try this before spending loads on vets bills .Mine wasnt diagnosed properly ,I had another vet out in the end and nerve blocked.Good Luck

I agree - in my experience this is nearly always back or hoof! My mare was exactly the same, lameness so slight it was impossible to tell if i was just paranoid, and turned out to be a back problem. I'd get both checked if it's still the same in a day or two.

It could have been something simple as he picked up a stone in his foot which then dropped out. If he is sound when you trot him up and on the lunge I wouldn't worry too much.

I'm in the same boat...

Horse just doesn't feel right on hard ground. Asked a few at the yard to watch while being trotted up or trotted on a surface and they couldn't see anything amiss. They probably think I'm neurotic.

Any ideas?

Horse is 16 though and has been much more stiff this week. I usually do a good ten to fifteen minutes of walk to supple her.
