Horse fizzy on top spec balancer

It took me a long time to realise that feed companies only have their own interests at heart, and that horses are basically just grass processing machines. I only ever feed mine fibre/grass nuts and chaff. sugar and alfalfa free. If they need a bit more energy then chuck in a handful of straights. Ive seen so many people end up with unmanageable horses and ponies because they've believed what the feed companies have told them and started feeding all kinds of unsuitable products because they've believed what's printed on the bag.

Thank-you. There are all sorts of undesirable side effects of the wrong / unsuitable feed. The effect that turns your pony into "a monster" - quote from my trainer who was using all her skill to break down the aggressive rearing biting pushy behaviour my 13 hand mare was exhibiting yesterday...and I can state quite clearly she is a lot better than she was now the TS has been removed from her diet even though I was not giving her anywhere near the specified amount. I had been feeding Baileys Lo-cal to both my previous pony, and the gelding we have had since 2007, and little Boo NF Welsh X without any ill effect. Gelding and Boo both did well on Spillers, but the TS definitely has too much charge for little mare :(

your'e feeding a 500kg animal, 500g of a feed a day,

That isn't going to send a horse loopy

It isn't necessarily the amount....all horses are different, and humans too.

My children used to say "Don't give Mum smarties" I weigh just under 50kg. I don't know what 3 smarties weigh but that really was my limit or I would be hyper. I have zero tolerance to alcohol, even a tiny 15ml dash of lager in a 250 ml lemonade. I am not making that up! A small trigger is all it takes. I will go back to cheap orange squash with too many E numbers and the effect on children's behaviour....

I know a few people who dont get on with Top Spec either - I cant abide by it, it did nothing for my horse when I was looking to put on condition and it seemed you had to feed loads of it! He just wouldnt eat... found out subsequently a friend who is a sponsored rider of Topspec wont even feed it to her horses she hates it so much and she does get it for free!!!

Hahahaha that is hilarious. My trainer very politely said "I don't feed Top Spec to any of mine". Her withering tone made it quite clear how she felt about the products. We are all entitled to our opinions, the horses best interest and our safety must be at the heart of these informed decisions.

Mine turns completely insane on 80g of a vit/min supp that has beet molasses in it. Tried it several times because I couldn't believe that tiny amount could affect a horse that much. One week on it and she is unridable.

Thank-you. Now for the billion dollar question ladies....how long did it take for the effect to wear off? I have already gone down the worry road after I ended up in A and E having been knocked over whilst doing normal groundwork with backing up, she reared knocked me flat, went up again and came down on me with her little hooves on my hip. I have no idea how but I was helped up by the ambulance men with a bruise in my groin, and severe whiplash to my neck. It hasn't even been a week yet since I stopped the TS so I remain hopeful she will come down from this. I am having a second session with my trainer hopefully next weekend, yesterday she was unrideable, and un-cooperative with normal groundwork requests.....

I was feeding my 2-year old PRE Top Spec lo-cal stud balancer. Last week, she was spooky, anxious, didn't want to leave the herd, and at one point was running backwards while I held onto the lead rope for grim death. I have now stopped feeding the balancer and normal service has resumed.

I spoke to Top Spec who advise if the feed is an issue you will see a change within 7 days, which thankfully we have. I feel very sad that I fed my little mare a product in good faith which has led to foul behaviour, a trip in an Ambulance for me, new helmet, and the necessity for a level of retraining which may well have been avoided. Whilst whatever was in the TS Lite may not have "accumulated" in her body (according to TS) repeated daily feeding definitely maintained an unacceptable dosing level, in line with horrid aggression which badly affected my pony. If something can benefit by being "maintained" at a certain level within the body/brain, surely it can just as easily be prolonged at a detrimental level too? Worth noting little mare had about 70g a day which is way less than recommended. One can only imagine the consequences of feeding the "correct" amount....
