I rode for a short hack today at 3pm and my poor horse got absolutely attacked by hideous flies and horseflies...dont think i will be riding in the day anymore this summer grrrrrr no fly spray seems to work either...any suggestions?
thanks

I have read permethrin is good at repelling horse flies. It's another scabies treatment. Can be bought from chemist no prescription required. Not tried it tho

agree about riding very early, I'm using tri tec fly spray and that's £36 a bottle! But it's still not enough to keep them at bay riding later on in the day.

I'd left my boys fly rug off since Thursday PM as it's been cooler and wet. However this afternoon the evil horseflys were out again and my little man was going mental, rearing, kicking out, bucking and galloping round field :-( I ran to the car to get his rug and as soon as he saw it he came galloping over. All calm as soon as rug back on again.

There were no flies in our part of Surrey today, we rode out at 8.30 a.m. and I don't think she even flicked her tail once. Normally they are absolutely hellish (I had to dismount and lead my horse the other day as she was getting so distressed she couldn't walk straight). Maybe they were having a day off and will be out twice as bad tomorrow!

flies are so horrid! 3 pm is probably a peak-ish time for them. I had to get some deosect earlier this year as Bilbo had lice when he arrived - but I still use it every 2 weeks on him to try and keep the flies away. Its not perfect, and it is expensive, but it might be worth a try combined with riding earlier or later (but watch the mossies).

Permethrin is toxic to cats as well as birds, fish and honeybees. Please be careful if you use it.
