Horse for Free

Sorry, if this is a young horse then i actually don't think you are making the right decision having him PTS. I cannot believe all vets fees monies have run out diagnosing this condition (unless you only had about £500 limit!?!). If this were my horse I would be looking at using my credit card or having an agreement with the vet to pay monthly to cover the costs. So many horses have this surgery now and go on to lead pefectly useful working lives. My sister's friends horse had the op less than 2 years ago and is competing Novice eventing now - he is 9.

I think it's a shame some people are so willing to give up on horses when others are prepared to put so much in to help them. I can't see anyone's going to want to take him on with the condition and I would imagine his behaviour is mainly down to him being uncomfortable.
 
I hope you stick to what must have been a very difficult decision. However the attitude and behaviour does suggest a considerable pain level atm. Giving him away would have been cruel but sometimes its hard to see that -especially if your knowledge of the horseworld and how it works isn't that extensive.

Had x rays of hocks/ back/ then 2 injections with xrays, plus call out fees etc then all the feed supplement the vet suggested - 150 for a pot so yes its gone very quickly since January! So we cant say we didn't try. At least he will no longer be in pain.

P.S Love how everyone is very quick to judge without knowing each other/ history or anything, calm yourselves!!
 
To be fair, you have posted on an open forum trying to off-load your horse (with a treatable condition) or have it PTS instead of spending out to have the horse treated yourself. I am not sure what you expected from people to be honest. It's one thing if you've exhausted all your options and at the end of the day if you choose to have your horse PTS whether it's healthy or not then ultimately it's your decision but you can't expect people not to be a little shocked about have matter of fact you seem about it.

Maybe that's not how it is, it's difficult to tell through written words a lot of the time but that's how it comes across.
 
Harrie27 That is very harsh coming from a person happy to give away a sick horse. And from your original post you said very little, except you would pts if nobody else wanted him, most of the replies are from people like me that have a horse with kissing spine synrodome.:mad::mad::mad:
 
It cost me one visit and then x-rays (£200) to have my horse confirmed with a kissing spine so what your vet was doing faffing about to spend all the insurance money I don't know.

My horse was not suitable for operating but my vet would have done shockwave therapy - would this be an option for your horse?

My horse is now fully retired. I'm b*ggered financially :o but there we are.
 
OP, I have been in a similar position to you for the last year. My mare's first condition went above the insurance limit by about 2k and another condition may also now go way over the insurance limit. I took out a credit card and paid my vet that way, and I will continue to do so until I am eating only bread and butter because I can't afford to eat anything else. If you are working, then consider a loan or a credit card. The horse might be rearing and misbehaving because it is in pain.....consider other options if possible.

Harrie, i think you just started this post all wrong, but at least you have now decided to be proactive and do what is best for your horse.
Good luck for friday, is is a hard and painful decision but it will be for the best for him in the long run.
If you cannot afford the treatment at least you are not sending him off to a uncertain, and maybe painful future.
So well done for facing up to your responsibilities
 
I have absolutely no problem with people putting horses to sleep to prevent them from suffering and OP seems to have made the right decision now following SOME constructive advice from posters.

What I object to is the high almighty attitude of some of you on here - your language and attitude stinks - I'd like to see you say some of the things you write to someone's face and I am not just talking about this thread!

There used to be someone on here called NativePonies and I do wonder if she has been reincarnated .... because she was so bloody evil to some people that she got banned I believe.

Keep a civil tongue or don't bother!

Very well said!!!!! Sometimes I think omg at stuff people write and instead of being judgemental I don't reply! She asked if anyone wanted the horse, nobody does so a polite no thankyou will do, you don't need to judge her and tell her she is satan reincarnated! .... just don't comment and mutter under your breath? Lets face it she has spent money by getting the horse diagnosed, some ppl on here wouldn't even bother to call a vet!...

I often wonder if people would be so outspoken and rude in real life, and so god damned perfect without googling conditions etc first, amazing how many ppl are on instant expert on so many things, the OP has the worst thing happening to her on Friday and some of your remarks could make her feel so rubbish about herself, just back off!

Sorry I disagree - if you post on a forum you WILL get feedback that is the nature of forums! If you are trying to give away a horse use a site like Project Horse etc. or even the Free Ads - you have no better guarantee of a 'genuine taker' than on here than you do the papers frankly. And who giving away a horse with such serious problems can possibly mind an 'ingenuine taker', as neither are doing right by the horse. If you cannot see your horse through a problem like this then DO NOT OWN a horse. I was duped into buying a horse for quite a high sum with 'problems' and if I cannot sort them he will be pts. I would never pass him on - it would not cross my mind.

Yes I know, and agree, BUT its not our business to judge and ridicule people, maybe its my nice nature coming out, I don't know, I just hate the way some people are treated on this site its often so so cruel!..... ps see my other thread PTS society!

I think this is slightly unreasonable, not everyone is a millionaire and can afford to see their horse through thousands of pounds of vet bills. I know I couldn't.

Unfortunately there are alot of Vets who do faff around, do not think logically or try to take your insurance company for all you've got. A horse on my previous yard spent £3000 in insurance money for a cut on her fetlock. Yes it could have been damaging if not treated correctly, but in the end all that was done was daily bandaging, cleaning and box rest. It was not particularly deep, and was more of a worry at the time it happenned because there was lots of blood. I know it was not that serious personally because I was one of three people who used to clean and bandage it.



I also wish people would stop being so nasty on here, as it really discourages people from posting their opinions for fear of being attacked!!!


I thought the original post asking if anyone would like to take on the horse was reasonable, and I'm sorry that it has come down to PTS but I think it may be for best if the horse is in pain and unhappy.

You are right - I think the answer is that you have to be careful in what you post unless of course you want a debate/row/criticism. That's just a reflection of the fact that not everyone thinks the same way and that everyones priorities often differ.

People forget that the written word needs to be carefully constructed, as without the softening of body language and facial expressions - meaning and intensity can easily be misinterpreted and offence taken and rows started......

BlueCakes - of course few can stump up £000s on a vets bill, that is why you take insurance and then if your limit is reached imo it is then up to the owner to take the decision for a monetary loan to pay for the vet bill or pts. As someone said it is the OWNER who has the emotional attachment and if they are unprepared to take a loan, you can't expect a stranger to out of kindness.
Lets be honest horses are not cheap to keep - this is not a small domestic pet you could say everyone has the right to own. It is imo a massive responsibility for the lifetime of that animal and if you can't take that responsibility do not own a horse. I don't think that is a mean/judgemental or unreasonable opinion.

OP, if you are not a troll, I suggest you think about the fact that you aren't in a position to provide full veterinary care for an animal (therefore it has to be destroyed) BEFORE you get another horse. this animal is being PTS becasue you amde a decision to buy somethign you couldn't afford to look after.

No, we're not all millionaires. And I, for one non-millionaire, choose not to own an animal I can't garantee care for. I wouldn't think I was being responsible if I bought something I couldn't treat.

Sharing can be very rewarding.

This is exactly what I was trying to say on my other thread, but its been twisted and turned to killing lambs and racehorses, i should have known better than try to suggest something sensible!
 
I don't think you should necessarily go out and get yourself into debt in order to pay for treatment. Each to their own but I know there is no way I would be going out and gettting a few grand on credit so I don't think you need to justify not having the operation if you can't afford it. Also, regarding retirement, personally if it was a young horse I wouldn't go down that route either. Different if you have your own land but potentially paying livery and all that comes with it for years and years for a horse that can't do a job would not be an option for me or many others.

His behavior is probably directly related to his condition and no you definitely shouldn't be looking at giving him away. I think it really comes down to the attachment you have to the horse and whether you can afford the operation. From everything you have said I would say pts is your only real option
 
Why did it take so long to diagnoseits fairly obvious.

My mare had operation and was fine after but 8 years ago it cost £3000 so more now.
Do the right thing, get the operation done, pay in installments of get a loan!

Failing that put the horse to sleep.
You wont guaranty
