Horse found with nail stuck in hoof! Should I be worried?!

I've known 3 horses to have this happen to them, one my friends horse and two were fellow liveries at an old yard. None of them survived!! Two were very lame, none weight bearing went straight to horsepital and were PTS the next day. One was not lame at all to start with but was finally PTS about 2 months later. If it were mine I would be out of work and screaming for the vet ASAP.

Vets happy with her atm, given us some antibiotics and we have just got to carry on what we're doing and get in touch if there's any negative change

I have lost a horse from this.

The vet should be called immediately on finding the nail in the foot.

Its not only the damage that the nail can have done its also the high risk of contamination into the foot.

Good luck, hope horse is ok

I am astounded that so many people think this is nothing to worry about.

Me too I can not stress enough how serious this is

One other thing I would mention is if the nail has been removed DO NOT to dispose of the nail - this can be VERY important

The nail should not be removed by anyone other than the vet

Mine was lame and trembling instantly but that was because the nail had chipped the bone. Would still get the vet even if not.

eta, just noticed you have had the vet.

Thank you for the replies guys. I know I was wrong to pull the nail but I had never been in that situation and had a mini panic attack! I know what to do now if I'm ever in a similar situation. We've done all we can for now, she's happy and sound and hopefully she'll stay that way, if not everything will be done to help her :)

Don't beat yourself up you didn't know , we all only learn from experience be it our own or others , as long as the vet knows what's going on and you keep it good and clean hopefully everything will work out fine for you both x
