Does anyone who travels horses on the M6/M5 know of any horse-friendly unloading areas at services on the south-bound carriageway? I know that north-bound Charnock Richards and Gretna Green have grassy areas where it's safe to unload and have a leg stretch - but is there anywhere else?

West Morland - Shap (M6)
You can cross from North to South carriage way at West Morland and cross some moorland so could lead about there if you want to stretch legs.
They also do best food!!

Gosh you are brave, the thought of unloading at a services is as scary as to me! Does it have to be a services? How about a yard just off the motorway?

TBH, hadn't thought about a yard, Weezy. A couple of years ago I made the trip from home to Cirencester (8 hours) with my older horse and stopped twice in lorry parks going south to offload. The lorry parks are much quieter and roomier than the car parks! The beauty of the services was that the whole process only took about 20 mins and we didn't have to worry about finding our way back to the motorway. But if you have a yard in mind I'd be delighted to have the details.
