My horse has been in hard work for about a year now & he doesn't seem to get any fitter. He gets tired very easily. When we hack out he starts off at the front walking out nicely & after 15 mins he slowly starts to tire & we end up at the back.
He has a large sarcoid on his ear & a few around his sheath, could this be what's tiring him? Do horses with sarcoids get anemia?

Tiredness & Sarcoids *could* be caused by the immune system not working properly, have a search on google there are lots of things to help.:)

what is your definition of hard work? his daily routine? his daily feed? type of grass he is out on? hours stabled? any supplements? his breeding? his current weight? his current worming programme? his age? his temperament? if you are happy with all the previous questions i would suggest you get the vet to run his bloods and see if anything is amiss.

Echo the bloods. There's a condition in dog's called hyperthyroidism (sp?) that causes swift tiredness. A simple blood test will show this up and it is well controlled with tablets.

Echo the bloods too. I would be thinking about possible anaemia.

Also, what kind of diet is he on???

He works for approx 2 hours a day, has 1 day a week off. He is used at an equine college which is also a riding school. So he does alot of jumping & lunge lessons. He is wormed regulary. He is stabled more than turned out because of his sarcoids. He's 7 year old cleveland bay. He is on echinacea supplement. He looks in fab condition, his coat is shiny & glossy. He is very docile, & sleepy & his bottom lip is almost always hanging down. He had a week off for easter.

With such a high level of work he's quite probably knackered, not unfit! What's he like after a couple of days off in the field to relax and sleep?

Also, from experience, many college and RS horses are stiff and sore from lots of incorrect riding and schooling. After half an hour work he may well be aching already.

And as other said, whatever's causing the sarcoids could be causing his lack of sparkle, tho unlikely if they're old and unchanging ones.

My first port of call would be a week off, then a vet to look for lameness and poss blood test. Then a good bodyworker to help relieve any stiffness.

He has just had 2 weeks off over easter, he was exactly the same when he came back into work. The sarcoid on his ear is big & is changing all the time. It bleeds a good bit aswell. Had it removed a few months ago bit then it grew back. Im waiting to hear back from Liverpool. The vet is due to come out so will get some bloods done.

It's no wonder he is tired  that is a lot of work :)

2 hours does sound a lot, but It's not 2 hours in 1 session its split in to 2. It's prob more like 45 mins per session. He starts off really keen but it doesn't last long & the other horses seem to be able to keep going a lot longer. He's always hotter & sweatier than the others. He's on working horse mix & chaff, not 100% sure how much as he's at the college. Never heard of EPSM will have to google it. I'll get onto vet for bloods.
