Well, she's not a horse, i mean 'horsey' girlfriend. I have been driven to seeking advice, the usual routes have not come up to scratch (psychiatrist, therapist etc) so i thought i'd come to her second home .... the horse and hound competition riders forum!

Is it right that her horses are treated better than me (why do i hear screams of yes!)? They have a more varied diet, a chiropractor, masseur, nutritionist, dentist (i have one of them), and the tall black one even gets a can of guinness served up every evening.

Why does she measure the horses in hands? Now surely this is just being difficult when everyone knows that things are measured in feet..

Why do i now seem to have a second career? I was quite happy having just the one job. I am now the remover of, transporter of and disposer of all horse turd. I was NOT told this would be part of the deal. And the other one... Stuffing bloody hay nets... terrible.

Now i wouldn't mind so much if over the last 1 year, 3 months and 24 days she'd have allowed me to ride more than just one of her horses... Well i would have been very happy with having a go on one, yes.... but peanuts can pretty much walk between my legs and i am 6 ft 2. Pretty embarrassing.

Anyway, back to my mission - your advice. Do you think a great valentines present for her would be for me to buy ME riding lessons so i could have the chance to share her passion... This present obviously really being for her benefit...??

Sometimes you just know when you've hit the nail on the head.

Well I'm sure a better present would be whatever her heart desires from the tack shop (apparently you can never have too many rugs or boots) or even a nice shiny new lorry

But if those are going to stretch the budget then riding lessons sound like a really good idea

I reckon a course on an equisimulator (note simulator!!!) would be genius either for you or her - romamntic weekedn to devon thrown in too - can't go wrong!!

www.enlightenedequitation.com!!!

Or failing that an all expenses trip to the saddlery of her choice!!

Actually stuff it - get her a few bags of feed and she'll love you for ever!!! The way to a womans heart is through her horses stomach!!!

She might not like you to learn to ride because:

a) you might end up a better rider than she

b) Presuming you're a bloke (ha ha!) you'll probably be braver than her

c) She'll then have to let you ride her favourite horse/pride and joy, not just silly little Peanuts!

d) all the other girls on the yard will be all over you - a hunk on a horse Phoaaarrrwwww!!!

Madhossy - you are clearly a very wise girl and i whole-heartedly agree with your 4 points! I will miss Peanuts though once i accelerate through to advanced level..!

hmmmmm!!

think I need to find a picture of Peanuts with 'dinkler' on him...

Sorry Saf, he's only got a sister!!!

I think rather than riding lessons he should take stable management lessons - mucking out, tack cleaning, feed etc. That way the whole competition aspect would never come into it. And I could blame him for any bad results I got as it would of course not be my fault but the person looking after their basic care!!!!

I am trying (and I might add failing!) to train my OH to become competent enough to groom for me at events - tacking up, studs etc, but not so competent her actually wants to ride (because he is shockingly good at all the other sports we do like rock climbng, ice climbing, mountain biking so I don't want him to beat me at riding too!).

So no riding lessons dinkler!

Mind you my OH thinks horses are the most boring thing known to man! He does fix the lorry though

Once he said the horse did all the work and I just sat on top. So I handed him my hat, legged him up (in our lunge arena) and made him ride. He retracted that statement pretty fast.....

He He He, all the comments are great!!! And I wish he had a brother too!!! (wonders of to find suitable partner, may take a while though, me thinks!!)

Spottedcat - count yourself lucky that you actually do any other sports together!!
Taylor, stable management...? Is this on top of my other jobs? What will be the starting wage!??

My BF rides, has a horse, infact thats how I met him. It is nice to tack up and go for a hack together, its a bit different to going to the cinema, or out for a meal.

He understands just how much my horse means to me, we joke that his horse comes before me and my horse comes before him.

Theres acctually a few couples on the yard who either both have horses or help each other alot with them.

I think if you want to learn to ride, go for it!!

Everyone is so nice on here!! Thanks for your advice Crazymare, it must be great going off for a hack together, i'll just have to try and talk her into letting me use one of her horses! I think i will learn properly, but riding or no riding, i'll still love her.. Happy valentines day 'TayloredEquestrian'!!x
