My horse keeps giving me electric shocks. Apart from the fact they hurt, he thinks I'm giving him the shocks and doesn't want to come near me.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing it? I thought it was a different rug, but I've changed it over tonight and I'm still getting shocks and quite and upset horse. Poor boy

I'm gonna be watching this thread, it's really bad with rugs??? My mare doesn't really like me anyway, it's more hate now!!!! I'm thinking atmosphere changes?? Car doing it to me too xx

Damp your grooming tools down. It's most likely due to the dry weather and static building up in his coat. It used to happen a lot with a horse i rode in the states, and it was due to this. You could also try the stuff you put on to make coat shiny, as this will reduce friction. Also wear natural, cotton clothes, rather than synthetic.

My poor boy. No amount of carrots (and he does love his food) would make up for me shocking him tonight

Thank you. I can't use the popular shiny coat stuff as he is a bit sensitive and it makes his hair come out . I'll see if there is a natural version that I could try.

Are either you or the horse wearing fleece or similar fabrics that create a lot of static electricity?
No fleeces for either of us. Yesterday he had a turnout rug on, and tonight a quilted stable rug. I had jods, cotton t-shirt, a cotton type hoody and a coat. Tried a different coat tonight too and taking off the coat but still getting the shocks.

I've heard that tumble drying clothes makes static electricity worse. My fleece dressing gown is awful for it if I dry it so long its bone dry so I take it out when its only just dry. I haven't been having a problem with the cotton rugs on the carriage ponies. I have to keep my hands moisturised daily especially at work as my skin gets dry anyway. Grounding yourself by holding onto something metal - I did that with a door handle when taking my dressing gown off, you could arm yourself with a wire coat hanger and just rub it under the rug as you take it off to dispel the static.

It's really frustrating as it carries on even after the rug comes off. I haven't ridden him since it started yesterday afternoon, but am hoping it doesn't carry on when I ride or that might be interesting!

my welshie and I sometimes share a little zap, don't know what causes it, he doesn't seem to take much notice though, I'm more of a drama queen about it than him. It's not all the time though, and he's not rugged so don't think it's rugs
