It might be just (ab)normal moulting - but I'd guess she has lodgers (lice.) I had a couple of my older broodies rugged through the winter - they had lice in the spring, but none of the unrugged ones did! Have a hunt around - the easiest way is to use a rubber curry comb and then inspect the hair that sticks to it. Cooper's Fly repellent plus is good for lice - and I have used it on broodies without any problems.

I have a 40yr old shetland pony who is doing the same, she has cushings and a really really thick coat that has come out in patches, the latest patch has left no hair growth underneath. I have bathed her and really had a good hunt for any little visitors but cant find any evidence. She also does not seem to be itchy in any way, which I would expect if she had lice on board

Thanks, Il have a look tonight, I havent seen her itching either but we'll see!! going to bath her tonight...hopefulyy she wont be totally naked when we'r finished!!

Ours have had similar patches over the winter, I have treated as rainscald (or ringworm which does not always show itself in rings) and treated with imaverol and canesten - it cleared up very quickly. Of course it may just be moulting but having seen what we had spread I would treat anyway.
