My 6 year old who is usually a dope on a rope has gone crazy broncing, jig jogging spooking at just about everything, this is so out of character for him, is it just the spring grass ? I haven't changed his feed iv cut it down abit if anything! He wont listen to me just jogging along with his head in the air wont work in an outline he usually behaves impeccably and wouldn't bat an eyelid if a bomb went off but in the past weeks hes nuts !

hes just gone on 24/7 turnout about 2 weeks ago, I ride about 3/4 times a try and go as much as I can with work but before the clocks went back I was only riding on a weekend.

I think it's the grass!
My mare has changed in the last few weeks.
All though not impeccably behaved she's turned into a show off, extended trott constantly and I can't stop her! Hahaha
Give a few weeks to settle as long as he's not doing anything dangerous, go with it. Just find different ways to get him thinking and use his new found bounce
Have fun while it lasts x

Ok, so drop the feed altogether. Forget the school, and just ride the socks off him. So start a proper fitness plan. So walking every day for a couple of weeks, building up the distance with a small amount of trot as the horse is not totally unfit.

Don't worry where the head is - it's not important at this stage.

Spring grass. Like Red Bull to a toddler. As Amymay says, ride the socks off him - forward, forward, forward.

My lad is 19 this year - normally the safest ride on the yard, he was an obnoxious git 3 days ago on a hack round the farm. He was being a spooky numpty so I put him to work on some circles and he was grunting, snuffling and wriggling like a hooked fish with a hangover, whinging: "I don't wanna and you can't make me, an' if you do, I'll do somefink REALLY bad an' ...."

He has about 2 or 3 of these days every year about this time and I just have to ride him though it. (So be aware, you've got at least 13 more Springs of this in front of you ;))

My two have gone mad these last few weeks too. One is still rugged at night and in the morning waits JUST long enough for you to undo the straps before dashing away like roadrunner leaving the rug in mid air with a cartoon dust cloud under it!

Spring grass - feel your pain!
Lunged my mare last night, her new field is on a steep hill so as well as having lots more energy she's loads fitter too. She spent the entire time either trotting like she was in a race or mad galloping around and she wasn't even sweaty at the end ...

Glad it's not just me having to deal with a spring grass gremlin then! My girl has taken to spooking at absolutely everything the last few rides, and ends up wound up like a spring.

This is the problem - we work them hard to dispel the fizz; they get fitter; we get older!!!!

Do you add salt (table) to his feeds? If not try that, start with a small amount and build up to a tablespoon (15hh). I have read reference to Spring grass often being high in potassium. If that doesn't help then try magnesium.

Yes do think about Magnesium
Farmers were warned that due to the VERY wet winter magnesium levels could be at an all time low.
Do consider getting your soil tested
Do read up on boosting mineral levels without adding extra sugars--ie not one of the molasses type licks!!
