Typical! Now winter and the wet is well and truly here, my Spanish chap has decided he is not coming in and he is NOT going to be caught under any circumstances! The whatnot won't come anywhere near me for some reason. He calls when my other horse, his only fieldmate, gets brought in (Sid the ex-racehorse is just itching to come in) but the little Spanish monkey will not come near nor by! He wont even let me check his rugs, he just bogs off at warp speed. I obviously provide him with extra haylege, but the field is getting so bog like I would like him off it for at least the evenings!

We have been down this road before with him. It usually resolves itself by him coming to me when he wants something, and will stand perfectly still for his headcollar to be put on. I have turned him out with a headcollar and a short piece of rope, but he is like my cats in the way they always seem to manage to dislodge their collars. he also shoots off when you hold the rope!

I'm only really having a grumble - I know he will come round in his own sweet time, but it is just annyoying! He is the biggest greedy guts ever, but wont even come for food, unless I put it down and retreat to the outside of the fence - The stupid thing is that I have him for 5 years, and think i know him inside out!

flippin' animal!

How about not giving him extra haylege. At the moment he is in a win/win situation, maybe after a couple of nights with no extras he might change his mind about being caught.

Oh dear, but I'm secretly glad that someone else has a ungrateful sod who doesn't care that his owner is getting wet.

I want a gate hugger. A miserable hungry one.

Not an independant, can take care of myself horse, for whom owners are to be dismissed until needed.

My young un went feral last winter. I got him back by putting his feed bucket on the floor & standing next to it with a head collar & rope. It only took 3 approaches & retreats before he realised, no headcollar, no feed. Then we repeated every day.Obviously, this won't work for all horses & in all situations but the idea is to set yourself up to succeed - maybe you can come up with your own plan to outfox him.
