Morning all!
Well, my horse was turned out this morning...or rather turned himself out! My niece was turning out and she thinks something may have spooked him, anyway, he's jumped a 5 bar metal gate into the field from a standstill! The gate is at least 4.5ft and he landed in deep mud! As he landed he dropped to his knees and face planted a little in the mud!
My niece caught him and felt his legs for any heat, there was none, and also did a flexion test to test for lameness, there was no apparent lameness.
So now I'm worried that when I get down there tonight my horse will be hopping lame! I can't get there until after work which will be about 6pm! I have asked the farmer to keep an eye on him as he's wandering round in the field and let me know if anything looks amiss!
Oh, also, there is now a small dent on the top of the gate so he's knocked his hooves or legs or something!
Please put my mind at rest that he'll be ok?!

I'm sure he'll be fine - if perhaps a little stiff.

Your niece wouldn't have felt any heat immediately because heat is not instant - but as long as he's standing up right and breathing I bet he'll be none the worse for his experience.

Silly Bailey...

Thank you!

The thing with the heat is what's worrying me really as I know it could be a completely different story by the time I get there tonight! He did go straight to his pal and start grazing though so that's encouraging!

Hmm, he is probably fine, but a bruise or similar to limbs that could cause swelling may not show up immediately on a flexion test..and mobility may be affected later in the day. In this case being out and moving around is probably the best thing.

there is also an outside chance that his neck/back may have been affected by headbutting the ground. the good news is that somebody was there and you know exactly what he did, so if he goes stiff or lame treatment is much easier.

I'm going to try but - and trust this to be the case today! - I have no car as OH has it to travel to other end of country and I'm having to borrow one from work tonight to get home!
I will see if I can borrow a car at lunch time but other thing is I work about 20 mins away from the yard so I might run out of time?! Oh well, work would just have to live with that!

No you wont' 40 mins travelling gives you at least 15 to look at him.

i would just get his neck and back checked anyway. Just in case, they damage thier backs quite easily but luckily if you get it sorted quickly are often quite easy to fix.

Thanks!
I am glad my Niece saw exactly what happened, like you say, it'll be helpful if he needs treatment!
The fact that he landed on soft (albeit probably too soft) ground rather than if it had hardened makes me feel a little better but it's still not good...!

Nooooooooo! He's just returned to work following 9 months off following a back problem!!!!
Oh no, not again!!!!!!!

My friends horse who had been on box rest for a week was being turned out in the school for a couple of days, anyway after the first night on Saturday he decided to jump out, going through the top rail of the fance, falling over flat on his face etc. He is fine, they are tougher than they look.
