Horse hair washing machine advice

Today OH has washed our horses' fleece rugs in the washing machine, and despite him getting as much off as possible before washing, said appliance is now full of horse hair.

Does anyone have any tips for easily clearing the machine? We've tried a couple of empty rinse cycles which has helped a bit, but still lots of hair!

Any ideas appreciated

Buy the x large laundry bags and put them in there stops all the hair going through the machine.

I bung some old towels and a couple of the scillicone "hair catchers" in and put on a good wash cycle. Also give it a good wipe out with a micro fibre cloth well into the rubber seal. Oh and I found out when my machine didn't empty properly, it was the gigantic hair plug, like a sausage blocking the pipe.

It's a game changer I can't stand the hair getting on our clothes so all the horse and dogs stuff goes in a bag.

Have you got any of those knitted microfibre cleaning cloths - the brightly coloured ones usually in packs of 3 or 5 from Aldi etc? If so, you could try putting some of those in on a short wash as I think they'll catch the hairs. I had left one in the washing machine when I washed a saddle cloth and it came out coated in hair, so hopefully it will work for you!

Same here! Second washer is in my tack room. My friends often appear and put a saddle pad wash on

There are hair catcher things you can buy, or (don’t laugh) I hoovered mine out when I got caught out. Get right into the seal and round the drum.

I also tend to follow horse/dog stuff with a towel and microfibre cloths. Also give the drum a good wipe round

I do wipe out the drum and then do a wash with a couple of pairs of work jeans or jods.

Another one for the xl laundry bags. Can’t be bothered trying to hoover/pick out hair and hay from it before doing another wash

If you're really cross with OH do as my friend did. Turn a pair of trousers inside out. Wash with saddle cloth. Turn out right way to dry. He was very itchy for a few hours until he took the trousers off

Make sure that you clear the drain after each wash and subsequent rinse/drain then at least you're not recycling the hair.

I always learn something new here. I've just ordered two jumbo pet hair wash bags. Here's my tip if the drum smells of eau de cheval, spray white vinegar around inside & wipe, really works.
