My 10 ish year old mare has hardly drank anything in the last few days and she has been worked. She doesnt normally drink alot anyway however the last few days ive noticed shes been drinking less and less. She comes in from a ride has a couple of gulps and next morning bucket is still the same. Any ideas?

Does she go out? And has it been raining? Ours drink hardly anything when they've eaten wet grass.

Otherwise, is she acting normally apart from that -eating hay, going to the loo etc?

it has been very wet and they do take a lot of water in through the wetness of the grass. I would check her urine when she has a wee - see what colour it is and if you are worried then give vet a ring. xx

..as above. Also, do you soak hay? I've found that makes a difference to water intake, too. Mine were in last night due to the gales, and didn't touch their water buckets (apart from rubbing on them, that is!)

Give bucket a good scrub with plain water, chuck a handful of sugarbeet into the water, make up a sloppy batch of sugar beet and make her a feed that's almost like soup, soak her hay. The last three suggestions will get extra water into her. I have one who every so often decides he doesn't feel like drinking, I just make sure he's getting water elsewhere, keep an eye on his wee and after a couple of days he's back to drinking again.

Hey thanks guys yes she is turned out for about 8/9 hours a day and the grass is wet normally when she goes out. Dont soak hay so thats a no no and she does obviously have water in the field I was just abit worried the fact she hadnt touched any over night. Will monitor thanks again

Water left standing taints very quickly from ammonia in the stable (deep litter and urine left in an un mucked out bed). And water buckets need scrubbing daily to clear the slime which grows. Put fresh water in nightly and refresh regularly.

My mare is the same - I've given up being worried by her not drinking much.

She goes out all day and has free access to a watertrough, at night she gets a feed with soaked sugarbeet in it - not much though. Sometimes she may drink a few litres but other nights non at all.

She is looking really good, bright and perky so think she is getting sufficient water in the paddock.
