Horse has been fully vaccinated, but by the owner??

Hey guys, I wasn't sure whether to pop this in vetrinary or NL so please feel free to move it if needs be!

Friend in Essex has been to see a 4 year old potential Dressage horse, straight from the stud. Due to it being at a stud with many others, to save costs the owner has given her all her vaccination injections. The vet said that physically its fine for an owner (not a vet) to give injections as long as they are not serious drugs sort of thing (sorry not very technical). So in effect the horse is fully vaccinated but because they haven't been administered and sighned off by a vet, to be able to go out and compete, they all need doing again!??

Can this be done, is it ok to give them all again? I know if a horse misses the odd one by a day or so, they have to start again etc. Apart from a little irratating, would this be ok, to get a vet to do them all again??

Sorry bit of a rushed post but any thoughts appreciated!

p.s stud owner hadn't anticipated selling hence why this was done.
 
Surely if the owner has vaccinated the horse, the vacc. chart won't be signed and stamped by the vet to say that they have been done - and this is what you would need to show to go out competing??

The vets shouldn't back date vaccinations - so I would imagine you would have to start them again unfortunately

i think it should be fine to get them started again...i had to do that with my TB as i was a day late getting his booster done

interestingly if your friend goes out to BD she'd be ok- i noticed in the rulebook that they only recommend vacs- its not a requirement....

BD do only recommend vacs - but certain venues will insist that vacs are done - so obviously you would need to have them done at these places - otherwise you couldn't go in!!

It is daft though I think to just have it a requirement - maybe its just like it is only a suggestion that you wear an up to standard hat as well??
 
Thanks very much for your replies. Good to hear that they can just be started again, I wasn't sure if there were any implications, health wise, to having them all again, cosidering she's only 4 and will have had some fairly recently.

Yes, you would have to do it again, officially, to be able to compete at most places, but it won't do the horse any harm

If the horse has had the jabs then starting them again will not harm it. However, the owner had no gaain from doing it herself and not getting them recorded - so she is most likely talking [****]#.
In which case a 4yo only just having its first flu jab might feel a bit rough and would be best not to work it for a while after.
I would insist she gets the horse covered for tetanus (and recorded) before you buy.
 
If it was done at home on a stud you are probably only talking tetanus jabs and not flu.

We do all our own horses for tetanus, we don't do flu for the herd (they don't go out) and the competing horses are flu jabbed by the vet as you need the official signatures for competition.

Vets aren't allowed to sign for their own animals. The vacc certificate may not be signed by the owner, rider or trainer of the animal. Hence Mark Johnston (vet and flat trainer) can't vaccinate the horses in his yard. There's 250-odd of them so if he could it would be a considerable saving!!
 
It's fairly common here for owners to vaccinate horses if they're not going anywhere, but vets won't sign the passports.
I'm rather surprised that a vet in the UK would supply vaccinations for an owner to administer him/herself. I suspect some pork pies are being told.
 
It's quite common in studs for them to do their own vaccs. I have had a few youngsters with the same issue.

Yes it's fine to restart with the vet again at any time. I normally get mine done on the way home from th stud :0)
