My horse had colic surgery exactly a month a go and since then has been a different horse to the point where people have asked if I bought a different horse home with me! She is like a dope on a rope! As happy as larry in her stable goes into a corral fine and just has a nibble on the grass and then happily comes back in.

Over the last year she has increasingly been not right. For example, weaving in her stable, barging to get out and then tanking off with me to the field, getting upset in field and fence walking to come in. She has been difficult to keep weight on where she never has before. And increasingly difficult to ride (not bad - just not right).

When she had surgery they found some of her small intestine had been trapped within her internal organs (not sure how correct that is but that is how I understood it). My immediate thought is that maybe this has been niggling at her for some time - not full on colic but something enough to make her uncomfortable and hence the odd behaviour. I am very much in favour of 24 hour turnout and was so worried about box rest but I do actually think that she is so much happier now - she just has a happy relaxed expression on her face now. Has anyone else had any experience of something like this or have any thoughts?

Not experience of surgery, but my mare had grade 4 ulcers. After treatment she has become a different horse. She is relaxed, happy and very laid back.

I think even a low grade pain must get them down over time. Just thinking all the time I thought mine was ignoring my leg, when basically she had a sore tummy and I was squeezing it :(

Glad your horse is feeling chipper now :)

Thanks Persephone. I'm hoping that it will continue! If it does then it has all been worth while to have my girl back.

When we bought him Cappy was a bit of a nightmare, bolshy bad tempered and all around difficult. Now,whilst still quirky, he is a changed horse. How? Coligone! He was always very sensitive around the tummy and our vet believed he was continually colicky and just dealt with it himself. except on very bad times. I put him on Coligone and he is a different horse, no more biting or kicking when tacked up and a much more relaxed attitude to life. He will stay on it for life! I just feel awful it has taken so long to find out what was wrong.

If your mare was in pain continually it probably is a massive relief to be painfree, allowing her real personality to show. Enjoy it :)

That is really interesting FanyDuChamp. She has always been very 'girthy' to tack up but had improved significantly - from having to be tied up to tack up to being able to tack up loose in stable with only a swish of tail and annoyed look - so I just thought that was due to past owners not being as sensitive as they should be. She is also a very stoic horse in general - infact it was very difficult to tell that she was actually colicing and we only took her to hospital to be on the safe side (vet wasn't sure either!). It was only on the ultrasound that they could see how bad she was. I think in future I need to be ultra ultra observant with her!
