Horse Has Left Nearly All Her Feed?

My boys won't each fast fibre alone. I mix it half and half with calm and condition in the summer and just stick to calm and condition in the winter. Have no problems with them eating C&C they love it!! I use only 2kg a day split between 2 meals and it keeps my 16.3hh HEAVY weight cob in condition even though he's on the worse grazing and only gets 2 slices of hay a day.

Equijewel is on the list of feeds that your supplier has. Its high in calories but low in starches so shouldn't make your horse excitable - have a read of the blurb. Its expensive but is usually used in small quantities as a balancer and if your horse is wasting food anyway it might be more economic. My sister used this to keep weight on one of their hunters that always had trouble keeping weight on. I've used a Falcon feeds equivalent and it worked really well.

Another thought is what happens if you break down her feed into more meals with smaller portions? Could she be overfaced by the amount she has?

Have you thought about Ulcers...? Sounds like she could be a possible case for them, my mare has them and i have had her 2 years and the way she was fussy with food and never great at keeping weight on always played on my mind and right enough then moment she was put on gastro guard she eats anything and every thing, i think it would be worth mentioning to your vet and seeing what he says.

Allen and Page's Weight Gain does what it says on the bag. It worked well on my sister's horse as he was quite underweight when we bought him. I don't know whether it's heating or not though but he didn't seem to react adversely to it and he does react to feeds with oats etc in them. You'd have to check the details on the bag. I am not sure about the stuff you are feeding her as in whether they are sweet tasting or not. I say this because I have a good doer welsh x I have had for about 17 years and he has always been fussy. Thing is he does NOT need any heating feed either as he's always had plenty of energy and only really gets fed cos everyone else does.

I have tried him on low calorie mix once and he wouldn't eat it at all. He has also been known to leave all barley rings/barley balls he has been fed (many years ago!) but eat everything else. Basically he has a sweet tooth I think and if the mix etc is not sweet he's not interested. We did put him on A&P's Old Faithful a few years back (he's 24 now) and this does definitely help maintain the weight - he kept far too much on over winter!

There is such a choice of feed out there these days, it's a case of trial and error I guess. I have heard that alfa a oil stuff is an acquired taste for horses - have you tried just normal alfa a?

Oh, i also remember we used to feed our oldies on stud cubes years back to keep the weight on - they may work but may be a tad 'boring' for your horse!
