Hi,

My horse has leg mites and I have been treating with the usual and am now bored of it not going away (grr, stupid wet English weather). I want to get a lice shampoo before I go for the slightly messier option of Pig oil and Sulphur! shall I get Seleen shampoo, Dermoline insecticidal shampoo or go for Frontline spray???

Thanks for help!!

I would go for frontline spray, worked a treat when mine had leg mites last year. If you want to try a shampoo the loriel anti-dandruff for men has a selenium base (I think its selenium disulphide. I spend ages in boots reading all the shampoo labels til I found one with this in it!) which is good for killing the little blighters!

On a riding school I worked on we had a welsh cob that got mites every year and noone could get rid of them. She had her legs clipped out kept clean and used to have an injection from the vet this seemed to work. I can not remember the name of the stuff they put in the injection.

When I got my cob he had bad mites in his feathers (really itchy and scabbed). I washed them with Dermoline insecticidal shampoo and when they were dry applied pig oil (couldn't face the sulphur, but pig oil on it's own isn't too messy). It was an instant cure, haven't had any problems since. Apparently mites can't live in an oily environment.

Every week or two I wash his legs thoroughly (normal shampoo) and re-apply the pig oil once they're dry, it helps guard against mud fever as well and keeps them really clean (mud just falls off once it's dry)

Frontline is very effective. P&S is cheaper and very good. If you really can't stand the mess of the oil, then just use sulphur which will work - I just use sulphur in summer and P&S in winter on my hairies.

My cob had mites two weeks ago so I got my OH to spray the skin on all four legs with frontline (saved me getting kicked in the head

) Since then he has stopped stamping his hoof and seems a lot happier in himself.
