hi all i just wondered if anyone can offer some advice / solutions to jay's ongoing problem. he has always had a bit of a cough in the winter - in a lot and we used to be at a yard where the indoor school could get quite dusty.

however, this winter he seems to have been much worse - he has had two tubs of ventapulmin, he has wet hay and had equine america airways powder and naf breath easy - none of which have made a blind bit of difference.

he is in at night (he has sweet itch) and out during the day - he is on shavings - i try to do them once he is out in the field.

we are riding - in walk he is ok but as soon as he goes into trot he is coughing and farting at the same time. i just want to try to make him more comfortable so any suggestions of things anyone has used and that have worked would be really appreciated

My horse is similar. A dry cough but not consistent. I’ve tried loads of things and nothing really has made it go away completely.

Here’s a few ideas.

Change to haylage if not already on it - a lot of people have said it works wonders.
Or Steam the hay.
I don’t believe most supplements actually work although I’ve tried many such as
Clarity
NAF respiratory
Horse herbs respiratory mix
Equine Exceed.

I’ve tried various steroids and nebulising - worth a try.

Antihistamine might be worth a try.

I’m now trying a mixture as suggested on here of vegetable oil/garlic oil and eucalyptus oil

It’s an absolute minefield.

Daughter’s pony has asthma and the best thing is an inhaler, the vet prescribed essentially the same as a human, blue and brown, but higher doses.

We now use them before exercise (first ridden in light work) and she rarely coughs during exercise.
