my 16 month old gelding has had a small cut similar to a paper cut only quite long on his penis for about 2months now.
i first noticed about 2months ago that he dried blood on it so cleaned it but could not find any trace of a wound, but then the next day it was all bloody again and got the vet out about 3days later when there was no sign of it clearing up.
Vet could not really get a good look at it he was having none of it but she did not seem overly concerned about it and told me to bathe it with some very diluted hibi scrub twice a week. i did eventually find a tiny thin long scratch god knows how he did it, know you shouldnt really clean this area often as you can upset sensitive ph levels etc
it did seem to clear up for a bit but last week noticed it was bleeding again, had vet out for his jabs and asked her about it again. she just says it will heal up eventually. He seems totally happy within himself he looks absolutely fab right now, its never been infected, and he runs about like a loony in the field. Assuming its in an area that just keeps reopening every time he pees?
anybody got any advice or similar experiences?

My horse recently cut the inside of his sheath with his clenches when he was kicking at flies. I bathed it daily with hibiscrub and kept the flies off with summer fly cream. Its very important to keep it clean and keep the flies off.

My vet had to cut the excess skin away under a local anaesthetic, he said there isnt many horses he would inject in that area without sedation, but my horse stood like an angel.

One month on and it is nearly healed.

I can only suggest that you contact your vet again and seek advice. This area is usually quick to heal due to the good blood supply.

Is it on the penis itself.... could it be that there is something caught up in the sheath that is rubbing or cutting it as it is put in or out???

Smegma can be very sharp if it dries out... .maybe a bit of lube shot into the hairy house could be all that is needed for it to heal up

I'd echo HPL - he's probably been over-enthusiastically kicking at flies on his penis and scratched himself. Is he in with mares? Some randy geldings will happily still cover flirty, in-season mares - if so, he could have scratched himself then. Is it on the sheath or the penis? If on the sheath, you could safely wash that with just plain water and apply a plain barrier cream such as udder cream or savlon, just to keep the flies off. If it's on the penis itself, so only rarely flashed to the flies lol I'd just keep an eye on it.

thanks guys yeah its on the actual penis right near the base, i'v thoroughly cleaned it cant see anything that would be scratching it, will just keep aneye on it lol
