Horse hates mane best alternative

My new horse has very sensitive skin and absolutely hates having his mane pulled. I used a solo comb last time and whilst it did the trick it looked very cut. I have been told that rakes are good but I am worried that when it comes to plait I may then have sticking up bits. Does anyone have any tips they would like to share on what they do/use. Any particular brands work well?

My pony has quite a thick, black mane - typically half of it lies the wrong side but once I have pulled I will use a Lycra hood to help lay on the correct side.

Tricky when they hate it but try doing a little at a time after you have ridden and the skin and folicles are warm so it comes out easier, sometimes works. Or do the same with a twitch, other than that a mane rake/comb is really the only alternative.

Would love to here any ideas as my welshie is fine with his mane and tail, but hates forelock being pulled and tries to move away. Anyway ended up having to cut it and he looked like someone out of dumb and dumber ideally not wanting that happening again!

Are you still back combing with the solo comb? The trick is to back comb and then cut at an angle. Takes a bit of practice but honestly in the end you won't be able to tell the difference (even the showing bods at my place were impressed so must look ok)

Ah, I wasn't back combing as I was worried with the mane being uneven but I can see now that there is a knack to it! I need to do it again so I will try your method. He does still chuck his head about however as he anticipates the 'pull' of a pulling comb so not sure how successful I will be! Thanks
