Bee had her annual vaccine booster today about 9am, come 11am i went to her stable to pop her out to graze, and she seemed quieter than normal also she felt cold to touch, so i lead her out of her stable to walk about, she was hanging her head very low also. Some thing wasn't right.... so i lead her to a small paddock and rang the vet. Vet said it seems like bee has had a reaction to the vaccine, and to leave her in the paddock to see if she can bend her neck to eat the grass, I thought bee would be able to do this as she had her head down while i was leading her, but now she couldn't..... so got some strong pain killers from the vet as vet said they can get a very sore neck after the jab (never happened before), she said this normally happens the next day not after a few hours... so been checking bee all day/night in the stable and had to place her hay/feed up high as she still can't bend her neck down. Vet said she should improve over the week end... Has this happened to yr horse/pony???

Yes, my mare had a bad reaction several years ago. She was not just stiff in her neck, but was stiff all over and had slight difficulty walking. Rang the vet and they said if it was no better the next day to let them know. Fortunately, she was much better, but they said that a few people had rung them with similar symptoms following their boosters.

Apparently, there was (allegedly??!!) a problem with a vaccine batch but this was not directly admitted by the vet! I thought that this was now quite rare, so I should keep your eye on your mare and let the vet know if you are in any doubt!

Hope that your lady is OK.

Thank you for the reply

am checking bee regular.

My pony has a reaction but not quite so severe. She always has a swollen neck after her booster and can seem quiet for anywhere up to three days. When she was in work we used to give her five days off after her annual vac as she was never quite right. Apparently it's not that uncommon. Hope she improves quickly.

One of my mares had a really bad reaction to Equilis Prequenza this year. Had 4 others done at the same time with no reaction so can't have been a bad batch, so vet has said we will use Equip FT in future for this mare.
My mare reacted by haveing a very sore neck too and was cold and then started shaking so badly I thought she was going to collapse! Had to fetch her in, rug her up and give her danilon.

Hope Bee recovers quickly, Dilly was fine again within 48 hrs.

I had a horse that had a severe reaction a few years ago andgot a HUGE abcess at the injection site... the vet contacted the vaccination compnay and they paid his vet bills.

I also have a mare that reacts to her boosters, she gets swelling in her arm pitsand stiff, we tried using different brands but didn't make a diference, now she gets jabbed in the bum and has a bute the morning before the jab followed by a few days of bute sfter the jab and she is fine

also know a horse who had reaction resulting in abses.and permanent huge dent in neck due to permamnent muscle damage. also some hairless patches.

One of mine had a reaction this year to the combined flu/tet. He was poorly for about 6 days.

Will make sure they are done seprately next time.

yes mine does every year he becomes quite and if he gets injected in the neck he can not move it for a couple of days if he gets injected in his chest he goes lame!
