Was grooming my boy yesterday and noticed he kept making a gulping noise, i had never heard anything like it before, it sounded abit like a back to front windsuck, he kept doing it over and over again, noticably when he was pouring the ground ( he does this alot when his looking for attention, very naughty! ) everyone down the yard was confused as no one had heard anything like it before especially as he was his usual self in every other way ( pooing eating, causing mischef looking happy alert etc ) any way called vet who wasnt sure but thought it could be horse hicups?????? any one else witnessed anything like this?? it seems to have stopped now but just bit baffled! and worried!!

My horse tends to get hicups when sedated I'm unsure why but my vet seems unconcerned by it and as soon as she comes round they go.

So my experience is slightly different but if your worried consult you vet.

It was worrying my vet didnt seem to worried and gave him a muscle relaxer to try and calm the diaphram down, it didnt sound much like hicups though more like a sneeze/cough/gulp???? that doesnt make sense but i suppose you have to hear it!! i think he knew he was going to get ridden and was looking for a way out!! he did seem to do it more when touched round his chest and girth area, and when pawing the ground ( i suppose same kind of muscle area)

Synchronous diaphrammatic flutter....?
I've been wanting to have the opportunity to say that for years.
Try giving him some electrolytes to ensure his nerves/muscles are firing correctly.

I asked abt these the other day - I didn't know that horses could get them until the helpful people on here taught me otherwise

For some reason its not something I would think would happen to a horse!!

friends horse gets hiccups when tacked up - the vet couldn't find anything but I think it was when she put the saddle on that it started. She used to just leave her tacked up or walk her round gently til they had gone. I know she found it very frustrating though...

my old boy has always had Synchronous diaphrammatic flutter.. (thanks shilly), it doesn't bother him or me

That was the posh name the vet gave it!!! god im glad its quite a common thing id never heard it and thought he was on the way out!! was so strange as he was quite happy and totally un stressed. funny thing was he started to do it on command, when the vet came he went quite then everytime i said to him 'show the vet your trick' he would do it, vet found it quite funny !! i think my horse understands more than i give him credit for! maybe this noise is his voice breaking!!
