I am musing on taking on casual horse holiday work, not living in, just local to me, field visits. poo picking etc. in a very ad hoc basis
I assume I would need some form of insurance, can I get this through BHS, and also is there somewhere I can crib a pro forma type/terms and conditions of what I will undertake and what the owner should disclose about their animal etc ?

BHS does'nt insure for professional use (i.e. you will be running a business). Lots of other companies do though e.g. SEIB.
Make sure you have insurance for damage to other people's horses too (e.g. leading a horse to a paddock and it gets injured) as third party doesn't cover this and it needs to be separate (can't remember what it is called).
Also, you will need to change your car insurance to business use, as you will be going to different properties and not just one place of work.
You must register as self-employed with the HMRC too (even if you work as an employee somewhere else as well i.e. you declare both at the end of the tax year).
don't be tempted to do it casually without ticking all the boxes, as this is fine until something goes wrong and you become liable for everything (and horsey people are REALLY bad at blaming other people for things).

Probably not worth the bother then for so little income. From memory, a years groom insurance (which is what you would need) would be over £300 plus and maybe an extra £30-50 for the car insurance (did this years ago though so may have figures wrong - won't be less though). However, the HMRC bit is easy and if you are not making much then you don't have to pay much in the way of national insurance contributions, and the online tax return is quite simple if you aren't claiming much in expenses.
You could do it for friends in exchange for favours, but even then some friends can turn out to be less than friends when things go wrong and damage needs paying for.

You can get pet care insurance for less than £200. To include horse care. I'm insured with Cliverton.
