So today my boy came in absolutely PLASTERED in mud, this is now a regular occurrence, matted muddy mane halfway down his neck his face is just covered in it... and with my already waning motivation to ride, spending an hour trying to battle him to get him looking clean doesn't really appeal! I have one of the headless snuggy hoods, but it just slips down and round. I'm a bit dubious about the ones with eye holes accident waiting to happen to me, but I'm losing the will to live!
Positive stories?

I have them the ones with full ears they do keep them clean and I have had no problems with them
However my horses are pretty well supervised I am not sure I would turn them out miles from anywhere with them on
I don't use them everyday I just let the horses get muddy and wash them if necessary
But they are useful if you want them to have a couple of hours out before a clinic or something like that
I was a sceptic but I have been impressed

I have one with eye holes... Once its wet it will obviously soak the horse to the skin and wont dry... Plus they do move about. My horse is chilled and just keeps eating if its slipped over her eyes... They can still just about see... Wouldnt leave it on a spooky nervous creature though. Has slipped twice out of say 40 uses...

I wouldn't chance it personally, even if the horse isn't bothered if a hood slips it can cause eye abrasions and potential sight damage

In what way does the headless one move?

I have headless hoods for my lot, some they fit well and some they don't. I wouldn't want to be relying on ear or eye holes to keep it in place if the rest of the hood didn't fit.

It slips down then twists, it was bought for my slightly larger previous horse where it never moved once.

My headless one just slips down . However my Lycra full face and neck one seems to stay pretty secure , never moved . However I only use it in the stable before a show , not sure how it would last being rolled with etc personally I think they can't be the comfiest so I'd rather he didn't wear one in the field . If it gets wet it'll probably get itchy too .

Someone at my yard puts one of the ones with eye holes on her grey (out in the day), it seems to work well and have never been any problems. The pony is in a field right next to the main yard and YOs house and adjacent to the road though so it pretty much always supervised.

This would be a very similar situation to me, pretty much always someone around to keep an eye! I would probably put it on & supervise for the first bit so could see how it stayed when he rolls, it'd never be on overnight.

Our horse was well supervised too, but in the instant it took for the hood to slip over his eyes and him to panic, that was absolutely no use what-so-ever as he ran in blind panic through multiple hedges and fences (including barbed wire) He very nearly had to be PTS straight away but we did save his legs after months of box rest and 1000s of pounds of treatment. He was an advanced eventer but never evented again.
A little bit of mud can't hurt!

Surely you just need to buy a smaller one then?

I wouldn't use the ones with eyeholes but if you got a smaller headless one at least his neck and mane would be protected.

I use one of the full face snuggy hoods with ears and eye holes. It's never moved once in 2 winters of using it, she rolls exuberantly and it never shifts.

I think its a matter of trying a different size or a different make of hood.

I personally wouldn't risk a full face hood for turnout tbh, I like the ruggles hoods, use in conjunction with a neck cover.

It's vital full hoods fit they must not be too big .
If the sizes don't suit your horse don't use one it's that simple .

I've used the horzehood one on my grey mare. I love them, it fits well and doesn't move. However it's not waterproof or a specific turnout hood, so if she rolls the mud just seems to tuck itself under the eye holes and seep through. I believe that you can get waterproof turnout ones? Looking on eBay the other day and found ones that end half way down the neck, designed to be worn with a full neck rug, that I thought looked good?

My highland, despite wearing a lw turnout with a neck cover manages to get his head, mane and neck absolutely plastered. I have been tempted many times to use a hood on him but I just dont think they are safe for turnout, Id be terrified it would slip and he would crash into something :( I have found plaiting the first half of his mane helps along with a good spray of pig oil, I apply it to his face and ears with a flannel and brush it through his mane and forelock, it just seems to help the mud to brush off more easily.

I have a snuggy hoods full turnout hood with ears which I used to use on my now retired horse as he hates his face being brushed and we were on heavy clay.
It was brilliant. Did the job and never once moved. I'd never use a cheaper Lycra one though as I wouldn't trust them to stay in place.

Snuggy hood with ears and zips. Eye holes are large so not much chance of the eye being covered. Also showerproof. Complete godsend for my mud monster and while it is alright to see leave the horse dirty...not helpful when you want to put a bridle on something that has literally plastered it's face in sticky wet clay. The head only ones slipped so I bought a full neck one. Also snuggy hood do an excellent repair job as well at the end of the season! My horse in my sig picture is wearing his.
