Horse&Hound Online Forum Cured My Depression

Hi everyone :)

I had my appointment for the insertion of the copper coil IUD yesterday. It was uncomfortable, but definitely nothing unbearable. It's not painful as such, but just feels very strange and unnatural. It was over within 5 minutes and I felt absolutely fine afterwards.

Standard procedure is to have a vaginal ultrasound a few hours after the placement of the coil to ensure it is in the right place. This was done intravaginal, was not painful or uncomfortable whatsoever, and took less that 30 seconds. I also got to see my uterus on scan which was pretty cool!

There was some bleeding but that's normal. I felt fine until about 18.30 (coil was inserted at noon), then started getting sporadic cramps. I'd be fine for 30 minutes, then be in pain for 30 seconds, then be fine again. It's uncomfortable but bearable. They feel like heavy period cramps, really.

I do suggest taking strong pain killers before and regularly after the procedure. I didn't sleep through the night and am still having faint cramps, but feel okay. It's nothing unbearable, and to be completely honest the worst of it was having to take my pants off at the doctor's... And contrary to popular belief, you can use tampons! The coil is allowed to stay in place for 5 years and must then be taken out (I'm assuming due to reasons of molecular degradation). If you however are experience trouble with it (heavy periods) or want a child before these 5 years are over, it's a simple and quick procedure to take it out and can be done at any time. I got mine done in the Netherlands (I live there), and we don't have a system like the NHS here, so I have a private doctor. If you're under 21 (I'm 20) all costs are taken care of by insurance. The copper coil is only 35 Euros though, while the Mirena costs 185 Euros.

To anyone considering having the copper coil placed, I'd say go ahead. It's uncomfortable for a few minutes, then you'll have cramps for approx. 24 hours, but I'd rather have that than be as depressed as I was for years. Just make sure you've got a hot water bottle, a significant other to wait on you and give you foot rubs, and some strong pain killers (preferably ibuprofen, or the special ones for period pain, I think they're by Nurofen? They're great!!).

If this post weirded anyone out, I apologise! If this post helped you, great :) Good luck to anyone going ahead with the procedure, it's not as bad as it seems! xxxxx
