hi there
i wrote on here the other day sayinng i was horse hunting but with georgis insurance not payn out i had under 1k to spend, well my gran has just sold her classic lotus elan nd is giving me some money so i now have 1500 to spend, i have been looking around and already found 9, with just tht little bit more money i notice there is alot of great horses out there at the moment going for such a gd price, so basically i am 6ft tall, no heavier than 9stone, and very slim guy, i am looking for 16.1hh med weight (ish type) to 16.3hh tb type,, 4-12 altho preferably younger than 12, price up to 1500, colour doesnt bother me, i want to be able to go out do pony/riding club, shows at snec, jump 3ft courses but have the ability to go further as i have been jumping 5ft this year, go hacking as that is what i do most days (lots of hill work) have fun and enjoy myself basically, i do not want a silly hot headed horse, so if anyone knows of any let me know, and if any1 has any advice that would be great, i am whiling to travel, i have seen to in essex one stunning coloured i really wona go see

How experienced are you? You can get a very nice tb for that price, or easily something unbroken.. But otherwise that's not a lot of money, for something that has already jumped 3' courses!
 
You should be able to pick up a nice TB type for that kind of money with basic training - as for horses to jump (and I presume you mean compete) at 3ft courses & be quiet/good tempered, unless they are 14yo+, I think you may find it could be a case of 'too good to be true' and I would have the horse put through a 5 stage vetting as that would be super cheap for £1500.

This one seems too good for his price, I would be slightly cautious...

If you seriously want to compete, you would be best going with something unbroken.
 
To be honest yes, if she was a lot cheaper than I would expect, I would think there was something wrong with her! However the two horses I have wanted were for sale for a lot less than they are worth! The first was unfortunately sold before I got my hands on him though! I suppose it would put some people off...

I am over-cautious when I see a very good horse at a low price because I tried this myself and I was put in a terrible situation with a dealer. You can get a good horse cheaply but they are far and few and generally horses at that price have a problem - they maybe quiet or good to compete but I generally find they have health issues, temperamental issues or something. Once again, a generalisation but yes.

Any other tips then? She is a genuine sweet natured horse (but an exracer), done mainly hacking and abit of jumping, but has had 4 weeks off, due to 'rider injury'. I had her 2 staged when I got her, and has never been sick or sorry, and also moves very well. Which is why I dont want her wasted in my field :(

What price have you got her at? Because even if you price her higher, you can still accept offers! Ex-racers are unfortunately very hard to sell, maybe offer her on loan with view to buy?
 
She is on at £800 at the moment, she has been advertised for about 6 weeks, and I started advertising at £1400.
I have loaned one out wvtb before, and ended up having him back because they didnt feed him, so would rather have her settled into a home :(

thanks for your comments, i should of made it clearer, i know i wont get something that will go out and jump 3ft from the day i buy it but i am looking for something that i can in the future go out and compete, i am just looking for a fun horse to go and enjoy doing pony club next year, doing the jumping rallies, camp, dressage rallies etc, i usually do almost every1, and i hack most days, i am moving yards on sat back to where i was before the hacking is amazing, there either is a school now or one is getting made, it was half way through drainage wen i left,
i would take on a 4year old needing brought on, i have fairly good experiance, i have had a horse since i was 10, so comin up for 8 years now, my 1st pony was a just backed 14hh which i still have and i have brought her on myself and now she is a saint, i had one on loan up until 2 weeks ago who was just back 4 year old by ard vdl dougals, and i had him jumping 4ft, his schooling was amazing etc he has turned into a nice horse but now been sold to further his career as i wanted to move yards, i am really not fussy on breeds etc, but we do keep ours out all year round, there winter field is a massive field must be 50acres at least and there 9 in it, never gets muddy and they get hay, i used to keep my dutch warmblood out and she was fine with a nice heavy weight on, i am prepared to go down to 16.1hh with abit of bone but really cant go much smaller than a 16.2hh tb as i need it to take up my height, (i hate being tall lol) i have found 9 horses so far that i like in my price range, and i thought with the current market and the time of year i would get a gd enough horse for this amount, i know its not alot but with the insurance not payn out and that i cannot afford anymore, i am only 17 and havent saved much as i put it all into georgi,

From what you have said i think she may be too small, she is 16hh but tb.

Try posting wanted ads on websites, local tack shops ect, or word of mouth could work. Have you thought about loaning one? You could find something that has proven record and 'ready made'

You can get an ex racehorse very cheaply from Ascot Bloodstock Sales (next one coming up in November). I got mine that way, although I contacted a few trainers beforehand and went to look at some then ended up buying one of them privately before the sale. You have to put in a lot of work with re-schooling etc, but if you're careful and know what you want, you can get a really good buy. My boy was literally straight off the track, but has been sooo easy from day one. He hacks out alone, in company, jumps, does sponsored rides - he just takes everything in his stride and never gets silly or behaves like a racehorse! Schooling wise he's got a long way to go, but we're learning together and having fun. I can't speak highly enough of ex racers.
