Today I tried the Chestnut Gelding pictured here. Not the best photos in the world but here he is.

I think I like this horse. He looks like a bit of a Dobbin here but was a forward going ride didnt spook although his companion who hacked out with me pirhouetted danced and spooked everywhere.
Hacked out for about an hour then took him to a large field where I did some canter work. At first very strong until I played a bit and realised that if I sat on my seat used my legs properly and lightened my hands he had a rocking horse canter. Did some cross country fences (v small ) and held on too much and started cantering into them too far out so he jumped with gusto and then was quite strong afterwards. He didnt rear he didnt buck and he didnt take advantage of my crap riding.

He was not what I was looking for but I enjoyed riding him but didnt like the fact that I could have ridden him better.

He was very comfortable. So I am going back to play tomorrow weather permitting and then I will try and get someone I know and trust to come and look at him.

Hes not the posh dressage horse that showjumps I was going to buy but at the moment he seems like he fits very well and thinking about it at 8 he is stable enough that we could maybe get our act together.
No piccies of me riding badly yet need someone with a brain on the end of the camera.

So 8 years old 16hh honest laid back chap forward going sen his paperwork Clover Hill Granbdsire and Bahrain something or other £9 BSJA in Ireland.

What do we reckon I would pay if he continues to appeal?
Oh and Cross countried in an eggbut snaffle which I wouldnt even do wth my little man.

£2500. Unless they're saying he can do more nad then I'd want to see someone riding him to prove it. Not my cup of tea but seems honest enough. Is there a chance to take him on trial?

if he has scope for more things other than local stuff maybe 4k.

But at 8 yrs old and no proven record at higher than Rc level i wouldnt pay all that much - possibly 3k?

Dont worry about not being able to ride him - if you didnt feel unsafe then he could be the one!
i hate trying horses as i always feel like i cant ride them!

I would say about the 3k mark maybe more if someone else can show him going better- thats not being rude to your riding skills.

If he ticked all the right boxes and you felt "right" on him then that counts for a lot in my book. I'm sure if you were to buy him and you was to have a few lessons together you would reap the benefits.

He looks a kind chap and with a bit of TLC he would look a different horse.
When I bought my horse recently I had set out to buy a "dressage" horse, but tried one that wasn't described as that although we could see the potential, he just felt nice.I haven't regretted it one little bit, so hopefully tomorrow when you see him again you will know whether he's right regardless of the type you were oridinally after.

Good Luck

I love Clover Hill horses - every one I have known has been talented and with a good temperament.

I think the values people have given above are very low - I don't think in our sort of area you can get a decent riding club type for less than £4.5k - 8yrs old is a nice age - from the photos he looks like he's got good conformation (although looks quite unfit), the only thing I'm not wild about is that he's a bit long in the pastern.. but that'll mean he's very comfortable!

If he was smartened up, fit and sold as a proven hunter in the Autumn they could probably ask £6k or £7k for him.

He looks a sweet chap.

His near fore looks quite pigeon toed to me- might just be the camera angle or him stood funny but I would perhaps have a look at it's feet tomorrow.

the estimates are low as nobody is parting with money at the minute.

yes he could probably fetch more money - but looking like he does now - with no impressive record he will not make the money you quoted unfortunatly.

its a hard time for sellers - i know - im selling one at the moment too!!

There is something about him that I really like, okay so he's not the flashiest on the planet but if he is as kind and easy as you say then don't underestimate the market for his type. On the assumption he is sound, safe and straightforward he would be 4K at least.

One thing for you to check is his front feet, the photos and his foot markings might be an optical illusion but they don't look to be a matching pair to me

Vicki-Krystal I'm quoting Gloucestershire prices as am based close to Artyannie - its an expensive part of the country. Bedfordshire may well be different.

Hes got a few to sell at the moment and I think theres an advert in H & H.
I will take a measure tomorrow and check his front feet. I may also sit on a newly broken 4 year old.
Problem is I am not Mark Todd and it takes me a minimum of 6 months to build a good working realtionship.
Thanks for all you comments he is over £4k.
I did feel very comfortable and safe on him and rode for 2 hours. Hacking and playing in the field.

He looks like a nice type but am not sure I like the way he is standing. As you say he looks dobbin like so it could the photo. You've seem to have given him a good work out and feel safe and thats the main thing. Sounds like you could have a lot of fun with him.

One thing I would check on a second visit is to make sure he isn't nappy and to take him out on his own. I'm not sure about pricing anymore as they seem to vary so much but if he's the right horse I would say anything up to £5k.

Have you looked up his Irish SJ record as I believe you can do this for free on-line and it gives you all the results not just the winning ones.

I can only go on what I paid for my boy when I bought him 5 years ago (seems like yesterday).
He was 8 when I bought him and hadn't done a lot but had been taught the basics properly. I paid £3,750 for him which I thought was a fair price for what I got. Not sure how prices compare with today though.

I agree - I bought an 8yr gelding over 8 yrs ago for £4000 & he didn't have any money of his card. The price wasn't steep then particularly for a nice horse, who turned out to be my horse of a lifetime.

I cant remember his BSJA name except it had Bahrain and Clover in it sad really they just added 3 names from his bloodlines together. He was known as Murphy when he hunted with Ledbury but has been nicknamed Ivor where he is as they have a shed load of Murphys.

He had the same stamp as my old horse Dozy wassock tied up forward going enthusiast when ridden and when I sat properly he cantered like a rocking horse.

where do I look up his Irish BSJA record?

I couldn't find the link to where you can search a horse's name, but if you email them I'm sure they'll point you in the right direction.

Nope I wish I could remember the rest of the name.
The Sire was definitly Bahrain Cruise and I remember now he jumped Grade C. He hasnt claimed to be a 5* winnings £9 do you get that just for turning up at Grade C (you can tell I am not BSJA) methinks if he was so positive into fences even though I was such a muppet and felt so comfy I might end up with another hangover horse like Gulliver would that not be better than getting some very flashy 5 year old that I could only ride when someone was about and only if I felt 100%.
Oh and of course a horse that didnt need correct punctuation or short sentences.

what a kind look he has, and the fact you rode him for 2 hours on a first try says a hell of a lot about how you must feel, is there anyone you can take with you who you trust as a fab rider to ride him tomorrow? as for cost i would have thought that if he is a good solid hunter as he sounds like, they will be able to get 4k easy for him going into the season, when i was looking i didnt see many i would have enjoyed riding for 2 hours!! and i couldnt pick fault with for under 5k - one thing - he makes me want to reach into the photo and give a big cuddle to

Some of the above estimates seem quite low but I suppose that's just how much a lot of people are willing to part with these days.

I think he looks and sounds like a good sort of horse. I'd say £4k approx value.

I paid £4.5k for my own 'dobbin' recently who is very similar to this chap. I think I overpaid slightly (mostly due to his colouring) but he's turned out to be a bit of a bargain just for his temperament.

A good decent sized riding club type horse is hard to find and you could always haggle over the price.

It must be this one.

http://www.sjai.org/Registrations/WebPag...&h=6231a633

If you click on through you can see he jumped 4 classes as a 5 yr old, went clear in two. He's got 1 point which is probably where he won £9 for doing a double clear in one of the classes.

I agree, its always better to have something you feel safe on and comfortable doing things on your own - go with your gut instinct & hope the 2nd visit goes well.

Weird, seems okay with me. Coming up with a horse called Bahrain Cruise Clover, No 2748575, owner Olive Dempsey.

Its getting weirder as my first link is no longer going into the bay mare but also the one above. time to go home I think and have a lie down !!!

and on the BSJA website if you search for Bahrain Cruise Clover he's on there too. You have to pay £10 to get his printout. But you can do it online and it's instant. Might be worth £10 if you're thinking of buying him.

sure the card I looked at said Grade C.

[/ QUOTE ]

He's grade C for BSJA and grade E for SJAI. They're different. Whatever points he earned in Ireland would be translated to £'s for BSJA

for what it's worth, I really like the look of him. He sounds like a nice allrounder that you would be able to do all sorts with.

Yes he does look pigeon toed in the photo - but even if he is, that's not the end of the world if he's otherwise tough and sound.

I have spent weeks not knowing what I wanted and to my way of thinking I could get on him tomorrow and go and play and if in 12 months time my retired lad comes sound and I have to make a tough decision or if I decided I wanted a different sort he should be easy to sell on. Not that this is the intention I want a forever horse but in the last 12 months I have discovered you never know what is around the next corner.

I like him too, I do think as others do he will smarten up nicely, I did notice the Pidgeon toes but it might look worse because of the photo angle as said

Let us know what you do and how much hes up for
