My 16yo mare, who was a rescue, has just been diagnosed with IBD. I think she may have been only grazing for food. The only sign is chronic diarrhea. The only thing that helps the diarrhea is a 10 day course of metronidazole. Completely stops after the 10 day course, the diarrhea comes back. My vet dewormed her 2 times, gave her anti parasite meds and other treatments I do not remember.

I am thinking of changing her diet. Taking her off of grain, using alfalfa pellets, beet pulp pellets, and a supplement. Any advice? Thanks.

Ditch the grain. Your alfalfa/beet pulp plan is perfect. Soak everything into mush. Add a probiotic and a vitamin balancer. Keep hay in front of her constantly. Change only one thing at a time and track her manure closely in a diary. It's a slow process of finding what works for her gut.

Thank for the reply. The only thing I am still thinking about is the hay. Here in Mexico, I can only get Rhodes grass hay. It is dry and has a lot of little twigs etc. Does she need the hay during the day (using a hay net)? There is no grazing for her. Thanks.
