I'm looking to buy a young horse to bring on and looking into it a little it seems that horses over in Holland etc are often less expensive than horses that have been imported and are being sold by a dealer/breeder in the uk? I am looking to get in contact with a breeder/dealer abroad to see if its feasible to purchase one over there and have it imported. Could anyone point me in the right direction??
Thanks:)

I'm sure it's feasible as long as you're knowledgeable enough to go over and pick out a good one, which I'm sure you are. Careful though, because the big yards may try and off-load a problem horse on to a one time only purchaser, something they wouldn't do to a regular customer. There are the big operations like Stal Hendrix selling top jumpers but I doubt they are cheap. However, just call them up and you'll soon find out.

What are you looking for? If it's a showjumper then you could get a very good competition horse from Ireland, which might be easier for you too. For some time breeding here has involved crossing ISH mares with good warmblood stallions and we are now getting some very good horses.

Thank you, very helpful. I would be happy also looking into purchasing unseen off videos if it was the right price and if it either came with a clean vetting or could be vetted (just looking at the options). Yes ideally looking for something 4yo or even rising 4 that is 16hh+ to bring on to show jump. I was thinking Ireland and I'd be happy looking into as well but I just didn't know where to start. The last horse I bought was imported from Holland and purchased here in the Uk but I was wondering is "cutting out the middle man" as such was an option.

Cutting out the middleman is a good option, coming direct will shave at least a few thousand off the purchase price. But buying just off sales sites carries it's own hazards, as in the vendor may not be fully truthful with you.

You can come over to the sales here Goresbridge and Cavan but the really good horses at those are now making big prices and may be outside your budget, then there's the commission you pay at the sales on top of the price. I know of a number of very nice horses for sale here at the moment, I will pm you on it.

I would go and look at somewhere like the Brendon Stud or StudUKEuro LLP. Caroline Phillips breeds really good quality showjumpers and a friend bought a stunning Darco gelding off her. Guy Williams also jumps her stallion, Zaire. She has 2, 3 and 4 year olds up for sale and is also in Kent - so not a million miles from the Brendon Stud. Just a thought!

Thank you, I have just sent studukeuro an enquiry via their website page. The Brendon stud website only appears to have stallions at stud on there, however I may just be looking in the wrong place?

Brendon Stud doesn’t advertise what they have for sale on their website, you are better off calling with what you want and go from there. They do put some up from time to time on their Facebook but again not often, StudEuro are the same. Worth a look to see if you like anything and ask.
Kimba Farm stud breeds a few nice ones each year but again you will need to give them a ring. I can’t think of any others off the top of my head.
The problem with buying from British breeder is, unfortunately they will be undercut by horses from the continent even after someone has put their cut on them for importing them. It’s a really shame and I would love to buy one from the mentioned studs or other British breeders but I am dictated to by my budget , if they haven’t got what I want for the money I’ve got then I will have to look else ware. It’s a bit of a sorry state of affairs really :(

Thank you I will look into it. That's the reason I asked about imports because I am also dictated by my budget and while a lot of British breeders do have some very nice stock that I would love to purchase from but a lot of them are out of my budget and I am forced to look into other options. It seems that either importing the horse yourself or buying one that has been imported you get the same amount of quality on a smaller budget, I may be wrong but it was wroth looking into. Like you state a bit of a sorry state of affairs!

Don't know what your budget is, but have a look at Charlton Sport Horses - they have a website and also a fb page, which I think is more up to date.

Some lovely jumping types!

A friend of mine, well known rider and trainer, is of the opinion that Dutch/German vets can be bribed unlike UK ones to pass a horse. He is in a position to know - I have no experience

Yes I have heard the same from someone who buys half a dozen youngsters each year from Holland to produce and sell. They use a Dutch agent and always have UK vet review x-rays and vet reports and I think the UK vet confers with Dutch vet where necessary. Because they are producing for sale it's especially important to them not to touch anything with even a sniff of an issue.
