Can someone explain to me exactly how to do a bute trial? Also how it works how long to do it and usual amount of drugs? I am going to ask my vet if it's something that might give more information about my horses problems but would like to understand what's involved in depth. Thanks.

Your vet would be able to explain in the most depth but basically if you think your horse has some niggling issue you put it on bute for a set period, say a week, 2 weeks, carry on as normal during this period, if there is something you do that normally causes your horse problems (for example jumping) then make sure you do this. Then it's just a case of whether horse seems sound, happier, more willing whilst on bute, if it does then it probably has been in pain somewhere. If there's no difference then possibly the horse is fine or more likely you need to try a different approach. Hope this helps.

I think it can be a useful exercise, but don't rely on it totally. It was one of the processes we went through when we were trying to diagnose what was wrong with my horse, Unfortunately it made little difference and I phoned the vet nearly a week in saying I couldn't bear to work my boy any longer as even with bute he was still showing exactly the same symptoms. And it turned out to be an injury. Good luck, I hope you get to work out what is wrong with your horse quickly. xx
