Ok so horse wasnt right when riding in the school, just felt abit 'short'. Vet came out and said he was sound on the hard, and agreed with me on how he was in the menage. So 10 days hacking, and if not change then visit to the vets.

No change, went to vet. In 2006 he damaged his hock vet says its connected to this, as joint will be athritic (sp?) and so decided to inject joint with steriods, and said he would expect to see an improvement in 7 - 10 days. And to build work up, so that in 3 weeks he would be back to full work.

So since the vets (9th may) he has been hacked mostly, then ridden in the school twice. I tried to lunge him on monday and he p*ssed off round the lunging pen.. *cue* me having a hissy fit!- and him thinking it was great fun.

Now then... he feels fab on the hack and still 'short' in the school, but not as noticable as before.

So what do i do now, i dont know if the incident in the lunge pen may have set back the recovery abit? Or maybe he just still isnt right and the treatment hasnt worked? Hmm im really stressing, as i have a possible show for him on the 6th June, but the enteries need to be in tomorrow!

I would speak to your vet the way he is no maybe the way he will always be your best bet is speak to the man in the know the vet good luck healing vibes!!

TBH if it was my horse i would not take it. IMO Its more important to get the horse right than go to a show- the risk of permanent damage is too great.

Sounds like spavins if he has arthritis. My horse has this condition and he cant work in the school (he is short on soft ground and in circles).Engaging his hock is too painful. If the injections worked last time he might need a boost.
I wouldnt jump when my horse was having diagnosis it was the one thing the vet stressed not to do .If hes in pain anything could happen.

Pidge went through this last year and after his hock was injected he had a few days off work then a month of walk and trot on a surface, followed by a month of canter work - again on a surface, he was on a satchet of bute for a good while too and this was then reduced to 1/2 satchet and then stopped entirely (takes the pain away whilst the hock fuses as that is the painful part for the horse) and then 3months after diagnosis he had the all clear and we returned to jumping

I would speak to your vet personally and ask his advice, but if I were you I would be taking it slowly as you say he is still short in the school. It is not worth risking damaging your horse for a show, if he makes a full recovery like Pidge has then there will be plenty of shows to enter

Pidge really didn't like staying to walk and trot and quite regulary peed off with me and would do a couple of laps of the school before I could stop him as I didn't want to slam the brakes on obviously

I remember ringing the vet in tears as I thought it would be harming his hock, but luckily there was no damage done, it was just he felt so good after the treatment.
Good luck

Thank you for all your replies. I rang the vet and he says he will be fine for the show, as its was treated early. But i am just going to see how he goes. I havent entered it, will just see if they will accept enteries on the day nearer the time. Thanks for your help.

P.s is there anything i can feed, supplement wise that might help prevent/ help this??
