Morning everyone,

I hope you all had a lovely weekend?

I know this debate has been had many a time on here about insuring vs saving for vets bills. Having always been in the camp that I will pay for it as/when it comes along, I have now got to the point with my mare that I want to insure her. As I've nearly always had project ponies that I've bought, produced and sold I have been very pragmatic and business like about it. However a non-horsey friend asked me what she was worth this weekend and I realised that it wasn't her monetary value, it was the fact she is so perfect for me that I would struggle hugely to replace her so I want the insurance to be able explore/cover every angle if anything happened to her.

So who do people recommend? Any success/horror stories? I don't know the details at all... How much should I insure her for? How much cover? What excess? Any little loopholes I need to look out for?

Any info would be hugely welcome, thank you.

Amtrust equine have been very prompt at paying out and easy to deal with. I only had one issue which was swiftly dealt with. However I didn't realise until I claimed that £5000 vet fees doesn't mean that it meant £1500 diagnostic and £3500 treatment. Which could be problematic if you need more diagnostic work (MRI, bone scans etc)

trouble is because you haven't had her insured companies worth insuring with will want a recent vetting. This is because people only normally start insuring a horse they already own when they suspect a problem. Also any minior thing that you may have had the vet look at will be excluded.

I always insure with SEIB they are not the cheapest BUT have always paid out (many times)

As for what price to cover her for, have a look through adverts for similar and go from there

oh dear thats isnt the case with SEIB thankfully

I have had 2 big claims with NFU recently, including a death. They have been very efficient & sympathetic - even informing me of things I had forgotten I could claim for.

I have used Animal Friends for 3 ish years and have found them great. They pay within 3 days of receiving a claim and have even paid out on back dated claims for me. Very happy.

Thank you everyone, I will contact the companies recommended for quotes and see what they require from me in terms of a vetting etc. Will also check the details re vet's fees.

Thanks again! :)
